Angry Migrating from Central Point Nightmare

    FFS.

I've just spent 30 minutes ringing about 5 numbers, 1 was a recorded message that sent you to another 0845 number, and then cutoff. Then you ring that one and it gives you a recorded message telling you how to change your username if you're having problems connecting, and then cuts off.
Then i found another number, ring that, and a bloke on the other end says oh no we can't do that here, and then gives me the number of the first recorded message grrrrrr

All I'm after is a MAC code so i can migrate my account to Zen.
As Central Point has been taken over by Fast24 (although the changover would be seamless according to the letter i got the other day), i give them a call.
Eventually i get through to a human voice at Fast24, who tells me after sitting on hold for about 5 minutes that they can't give out MAC addresses anymore, as they're not given them
She suggests i cancel my account and signup fresh with Zen. I tell her that'll cost me £50 connection. She says, yup. I hang up.

I hate ISPs. Facial death to all of them.

How the hell are they not given mac addresses? They using some kind of magic hardware? Although why do you need your mac address to mgirate to another isp? Surely you can find it out yourself?

rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishey I don't think you 'can' get a MAC (This is a Migration Authorisation Code as opposed to a MAC number assigned to your NIC) from Central Point as they use a different network to BT - only ISP's using BT's network have MAC codes for Migrating. This means you're basically fooked if you want to change ISP, unless you can find somewhere with a deal on for connecting - e.g. Bulldog free connection. I'm looking at changing from them although I just CBA with the hassle at the moment so I'll sort it out when I can be

Thanks for the replies guys. I tried again this evening and managed to get through to someone who actually knew what the hell they were talking about.

Basically as CP is being overtaken by Fast24 and the whole system is being brought across from Telephonica (which CP used) to NetServices they can't issue MACs as it'd screw up the transition.

So I have to wait a few weeks until they've unbunched their panties and they'll be able to issue a code to me and then i can move it.

Talking to Zen apparently it is a legal requirement of all ISPs to give you a MAC address. It's then up to your new ISP to tell you if they can use it or not.
    Learn something evey day
