    Ad hoc wireless networking.

Looks like I might be getting the use of a centrino notebook from work.

At the moment, I only have one PC in my house. Connected to the net via USB modem.

I'd like to use wireless networking, but don't particularly want to buy a router. As the notebook would probably only be in use as an alternative when the main PC is being used anyway, I'm thinking of running it ad hoc.

Apart from the obvious, like having to keep the main PC on, what issues might I stumble across if I was to set up a network like this, rather than a router-based one?

It would be alright for internet sharing but not very fast for file sharing. For just two PCs it will be OK.

Ad hoc is normally even less reliable than routed. Yup internet sharing should be ok.

you dont need to buy a router - just an access point will be fine , you might need a little hub to network your PC and the access point together. You can use Internet connection sharing on the pc with the DSL connection in it and cable the access point to somewhere where it will have agood signal.

Cheers for the info people. I won't do much file sharing, just for occasionally having 2 different PCs connected to the net. One for me to look on here and a few other forums, and one for the Mrs to have a browse on ebay

I'll borrow a wireless PCI card for my tower PC and have a fiddle with an Ad Hoc setup. I can always buy a WAP or router at a later date if I decide it would be better.
