Any ideas?

Skype is direct P2P.
Unless he is using IP hiding software (routing it through other PCs) such as Nortons then it shouldnt be that.

Another problem I've heard is if youre running zonealarm, it can sometimes cause skype to go haywire abit but it doesn't happen in every case... wierd but true..
99.9% of all computer problems are caused by the software between the keyboard and the chair.(A8N-Sli deluxe owners excluded)

Reply from cousin (Me) - The problem was the processor (a laptop 1G Celeron) was maxing out, trying to do the compression/translation of voice.
However I've heard that Skype relays, and can be detected when trying to file transfer, as it goes via a server, and not direct P2P (I've heard it can be because of hardware firewalls - but not had time to test - may even be UPNP).
