Wireless networks - Whats the maximum distance? (for rural broadband sharing scheme)

I am just slightly too far from the exchange for broadband. Like thousands and thousands of other people, BT have no plans to help us rural people.

But there are people in my area that have it and i am thinking of starting a wireless broadband sharing scheme. This would mean that the 'host' would get the fastest connection available for free, in return for myself, and posibly others in my situation, sharing the connection wirelessly and spreading the cost.

I am only just starting to look into this, so i was wondering if any here had any simular experiences. Does anyone know how far WiFi will work?

I know there are other people doing this but can't find many websites about it. Anyone got any links? Thanks.

    Yep, lots.

http://www.turnpoint.net/wireless/cantennahowto.html is an easy one, but US designed so just find a similar UK one

    Like this; http://www.nodomainname.co.uk/cantenna/cantenna.htm

www.cantenna.com sell their own premade ones.

Soz, u should be able to get a good km LOS or more.

there is someone on the micromart forum who runs his own wireless broadband service.
of course this costs thousands to setup but maybe you are that man to take the challenge on or just a big girls blouse.

It's a serious idea. I have been talking with a guy from a company called 'Rural Broadband' and some people in my area are very interested. I does not have to cost thousands at all. Not talking WiMax, whichwould cost thousands. I will blog it on Hexus when (if) we do it.

Good for you, just how large an area are you hoping to cover? Also make sure the ISP is happy with that.
