    Question Slow wireless speeds

Hello all! I've very recently purchased a Belkin Modem Router. It's the 125mbps model Wireless-G model. Along with that, I purchased the Wireless-G PCI network card (125mps model). So then, got it all set up and running fine.

The only problem is the signal strength. Before I conigured the internet and just had a radio signal to the router, I was getting a 'Very Good' and 'Excellent' signal. Now for some strange reason with the internet enabled, It can be anything from 'Low' to 'Very Good'. To be honest with you most of the time it's low. If I ping www.google.com in command prompt I'm getting an average of 43ms, which I suppose is alright (I'm on 512k).

Also another thing which is confusing me is the fact that when I start up my computer and log in, the connection speed to the router is 125mbps which it is supposed to be. But after time it goes down to 80mbps which it's at now. Why is this? I'm thinking that maybe there is interrance between me and the router, but all there is is a monitor, a tv and some bannisters!

If anybody could help with the matter and point me in the right direction I would be greatful Thanks alot.

Check the direction on the aerials. Make sure they are pointing straight up (I find that gives the best output)

Well mine is nearly vertical. My VGA connector in my graphics card is in the way but I'd say its sticking up about 80 degrees.

The arials on the router itself are vertical.

    125Mb/s is a theoretical maximum.
    80Mb/s isn't so bad tbh.
If you're only using it to access the internet then it's rather academic, really.
Ping your router's IP address to see how fast that part of the link is.

I have exactly the same bundle. I also get 80MB/S even with a high gain external aerial on the back of the PCI card.

However, now I do get Very Good to Excellent signal strength. I was getting Low with the stock aerial on the card.

There is also a firmware update available for this router but you will need to do a factory reset if you apply the firmware update.

Hmmm, well it seems to have become worse. I have moved my pc downstairs so Im next so the router (its about 3m away). I get good signal strength (very Good & Excellent), BUT, and its a bloody big but, my wirless keeps dropping. i get about 40ms and then it rises till the connection drops, then returns to 40ms and repeats this over and over. Anyone any ideas? lol

I had similar problems with my home set up, varying connection 'qualities'. In the end I think I was getting interference from some other household appliances. I changed the frequency from the default (11) to another one (eventually 4). I now get good or very good connection all the time.

Just tried it over a lan game of ut2004 and it was lagging there as well. So it must be the wirless. It's as though it cant cope with the data transfer or something I dont know, but it shouldnt be doing that.

Just thought i'd say that I changed the booster from 125 high speed mode to frame burster and everything seems ok. So what is the difference with them? I can see that I'm not getting as good mpbs (36mbps) but everything seems stable for the time being. no point in using 125mpbs if it doesnt work properly!

How is the lag in frame-burst mode? I might give that a go as well.

[Edit]: I've turned off the Turbo mode altogther. Ran the speedtest on ADSLguide and it ran at max speed for my 1Mb Nildram link. Other sites seem to download much quicker and there's no initial delay when trying to get to a site. Some sites load almost the moment I press the enter key!

With turbo mode off I get a 36Mb/s connection from my desktop to my router. I'll stick with this for now as it appears to be faster for Internet stuff.

Yeah, network speed appears to be the same win Frame-Burster and no turbo mode at all, so I'll have to look into the differences.

Thanks alot for your time anyway guys

so what, exactly, is this "turbo mode" for then? Judging by what people have had to say it has the complete opposite effect!

Lol yeah it seems that way. As far as I can see though it's just for a quicker connection over the network. I did have it in 125 mode but then it went silly on me. So instead of 125mbps I get 36mbps which has no affect of the internet speed, as my internet is 512kbps.
