    BT Line Length problems

    When my house was built, about 5yrs ago, BT took the "cheap" option and wired the estate the wrong way.

    See the diagram below…
    The red line is the route my phoneline takes (as shown by an engineer during a visit).
    The blue line is the route the line should have taken.

    The red line is 6.5km from house to exhange, hence limiting me to 512kb
    The blue line would be 1.2km from house to exhange therefore giving me at least 1mb and possible 2mb.

    There is a cabinet at the end of the road (where the blue line finishes) and it does have capacity, but I don't see anyway of convinving BT to investigate.
    All BT say is "There is no fault on the line"

    It's doing my head in, when everyone else is announcing faster and faster lines and I'm stuck on 512.

    Can anyone help?

    I've found the only way to get them to do anything is to bug them several times a week for about 9months..

    Even then they never fixed it..

    Sorry mate, but the chances of BT rerouting your line are about 1,000,000 : 1. I have been down this route twice with BT in the last 12 months. I can't even get any ADSL signal down my line. For some reason i am connected to a village about 8 miles away, rather than the village i live near (1-2 miles away). BT have atempted to get ADSL working twice and I am just a little to far. It's a wind up when BT tell you both times that a house just 500 yards down the road gets 512 no problem.

    But the most annoying problem is that it would be simple to swing the line around to another post. But BT won't cover the cost. Both engineers have told me that even some whole villages are without broadband when a simple bit of line swapping would would fix it, so a single property like my does not stand a chance.

    So until something like WiMax comes to my area or cheap a full duplex satalite provider comes along, i am having to use OnSpeed. Makes surfing much much faster but i still have slow downloads and online gaming is out of the question for now.

    As for bugging BT, you can't really. BT wholesale won't eve give you the time of day unless you are an ISP. All i can say is just be happy you can get 512. Thusands like me will probably still be on dial up for the next few years .

    You tried finding out how much it would cost to do the line swapping, then seeing how many people would be happy to pay towards it in your area and split the cost?

    They won't give out that info. Thats out of the question for now. Even some high profile magazines campaigning for better rural coverage have not been able to get anywhere with that line of enquiry. Private customers are not allowed to contact the relevant department directly anyway. BT say it's a mater of resources not just cost.

    I'm in same position in Newbury town centre. I live 500m from the exchange but becuase of the route it's been wired I can only get 1mb max instead of the offered 8mb.

    Luckily I get NTL and at least I can get 1mb serivce should I wish to switch back to adsl.

    I got exactly the same response from BT as you did though & it is extremely frustrating. i.e. there's no problem with your line repeated a million times & no we wont put you throught to wholesale as you're not an ISP.

    for some reason BT bent over backwards to sort out our lines. They spent a fortune on it and all we wanted as to gor from 512 to 1mb. I suspect our enquiry highlighted a far more serious problem with the line which they had to fix anyway.
