More details would help - do you mean you can' t log into your space on onetel's FTP site (for uploads for your website?) or that you're hosting an FTP at home and can't log into it from outside (work, uni, whatever).

Do you at least get a log-in prompt (i.e. are your username and password rejected or can you not connect to port 21 - try either the command line "FTP myftpsite" or "telnet myftpsite 21"?)...

If you can't connect at all is there a firewall somwhere between the client and server that might be blocking access?

I tried the above and couldn't connect. I just don't know what the problem is. I have free webspace at onetel.com and have tried to access this through a number ftp programs and web design packages. Each time it has found host but has been unable to connect.

My platform is windows XPprofessional and I am dead cert that the ftp address and login details are correct. I have tried to connect with my windows firewall on and off.

Is this a problem with windows xp??

What settings can I configure to fix it??
Are my port settings right eg port 21??
How do I check if they are correct is there some command in cmd I can type in to check if ports are correct?
If incorrect how to I reassign ports??

    Thnx

Just tried to ftp to ftp.onetel.com and ftp.onetel.net.uk but they both time out i.e. there is no server responding to my FTP program. This could be because

    1) onetel bars non-onetel people from connecting to them, or
    2) their FTP server is down.

However, according to their status page everything is hunky dory:

    http://www.onetel.co.uk/index.php?no...network-status

I suggest you try again tomorrow and if no joy then maybe bite the bullet and ask Onetel about it?

Windows XP firewall blocking the return traffic on the control port (not data which is allowed by default)

More details rarther than "its not working" would be better to help.
    It is Inevitable.....

?? No, I'm just trying to help Ben out. I'm not a onetel customer but spent 2 secs trying to log in to Onetel FTP to see if the prob is at the server end rather than just posting speculative replies
