    Sharing Broadband Connection .....

Are there any 'cheapish' routers out there which will let me share my broadband connection with my neighbour looking for something that will allow me to specify how much bandwidth available per port (this port will only be used for internet traffic and not local). ???

To port throttle on a router is tricky for cheap money

Check the t&cs of your ISP first.....

But that aside it is easy to do without any limitations, haven't seen any domestic routers that allow you to do what you want.

should have added that if you have an pld PC you could build a Linux system as a server to do what you want. One example to look at is is m0n0wall.

a number of linux-based Linksys routers can have much more sophisticated firmware flashed on, e.g. openwrt.

or use a dedicated router distro like m0n0wall

    ok...you gotta know.

Draytek Vigor 2600 does it. It's just some dough It's a superb ADSL router. Moby and Jiff will tell you

I have bid on one from the US and it's not here yet! but if it does get here, I've had a result!

I've yet to have a play with any of the hacked linysys boxes , but I suspect they could be mighty neat ( and possibly dare I say it better than a draytek )

I still woudln't use a hacked firmware box on a client site though.

This is for my own use...not thinking of putting this anywhere near customer sites ....
I Should have pointed out I am on cable not ADSL so this one seems just fine, seems to do the bandwidth throttling as needed:

    http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor2900.html..

£164 is cheapest i can find it ..... ARGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Thats a bit dear. Anyone know where I can get it a tad cheaper.

so let me get this straight in my head. The 2600 will actually allocate bandwidth. So if i had 3 comp on a 2mb line i could give each line 666kb/s,and if im gaming on my line (port 1) and someone is downloading at say 50kb/s on there 666kb/s line (port 2) i wouldnt experience any effect whatsoever from there downloads?

Thats how I read it.... for me 2Mb (2x1Mb ) would be just fine. It would however take a while to get that cost saving back at this price though... need to try and see if I can get it cheaper..

i need a 100% deffinate, as its 150 quid router , cheers for ur input though farooqm. It would still work out cheaper than having to pay for my own inet instead of splitting it 3 ways

I very v. happy with my old Draytek 2200-USB, but haven't used a newer, throttling-capable model. Does anyone know if you could achieve farooqm's objectives with Quality of Service settings on a router? May be a cheaper option than the Draytek route and simpler than the Linux box.
