I reckon it would work, what have you got to loose anyway ?
wont work. you need a router - see ebuyer - and a hub. or you could run the usb into your pc and use your pc as teh router but then it'd need to be on 24/7. then you'd just need some cat5 crossover

when you said modem did you really mean modem ? I assumed it was a router, people always get them confused.
ntl installed cable modem.
No, you can't use them both.
NTL home broadband services only allocate you with one IP number, and if you want to connect multiple machines to it, you need to use a router. That router could be a dedicated box (Netear, DLink, etc do them), it could be a piece of software running on one machine, or it could be a dedicated PC Router comprising an old PC and something like Smoothwall.
Whatever the router is, it'll need to be running something called NAT (Network Address Translation) to convert the multiple private IP's used by your machines to the single IP public IP allocated by NTL (and back again).
I think Smoothwall or IPCop are the best ways to go for firewalls. They are cheap and very fortified but they are not the easiest things to configure and you have to do a fair bit of configuration.
here are some good off the shelf alternatives.
The Netgear RT 314 is pretty good:

or the Linksys BEFSX41

I choose IPCop over smoothwall, sm has some bugs that wind me up, whereas IPCop does not. I like all the options and traffic graphs etc that you get with it, rather than using a hardware router.
