Just wondering if its possible to network an internet connection through a USB modem. In my experience ive never managed it with ntl or wanadoo. Is it possible and how?

wait.. what kind of 'modem'?.. and what do you mean 'network an internet connection'? It's a rather vauge question, we need to know what you're trying to achive, networking has a whole bunch of different ways to skin the same cat.

If you have a router why do you need to share the connection using your machine? Or do you mean you have a usb modem, and a router that doesnt accept usb connections? In which case its doable, but not really ideal. You should really buy a router with a built in modem.

Bit silly buying that werent you. PC world advice by any chance? If you can send it back and get one with a modem. If not you can use internet connection sharing in XP and turn off everything in the router to basicaly make it a hub.

ive had the router for a while. I was using ntl and they use ethernet modem's. But my folks decided to get wanadoo and they only give you a usb modem.

Basically i was wondering what the solution was netoworking from a usb modem if you dont have a router with a usb connection.

The only thing i could think of was sticking the the usb modem in my machine then making my machine a server so it can share the connection.

This isnt a rookie error or anything just a pondering.

You can, but like i said, get a modem router, easier, and cheaper in the long run (electricity costs). Sorry about the noob thing, just used to get a lot of people in maplins wondering why stuff like that didnt work, the classic was can i just buy this USB network adaptor, i get so pissed off with it one day (about 5 or 6 people asked me in the space of 2 hours) i just started telling people it was cos it had the wrong connector on it rather than explaining what the actual problem was.

no worries. Anyway ive cheated now since i dont have to pay for it so i just slammed a wireless network in. Wish i could do that at uni.

Cat 5 ethernet cable everywhere. up and down 2 flights of stairs covered in electrical tape.
