Singapore Airlines appears to be offering in-flight broadband access - is this new or have I been in a dark hole for a while? I would have thought that what with the "no broadcasting devices" rules, this would be unfeasible.

Damn that must be one long ethernet cable
Seriously, can't say I've heard about this either... got a link?

it was on the reg a year or 2 back.
Its only during take off and landing they are worried about such interfearance.

I got miffed on my flight to Egypt. My phone has a "flight mode", so I loaded up my phone with tons of games and comedy audio sketches to entertain me on the plane. When the warning came on to switch all phone soff etc. I turned mine to flight mode. During the flight I started using my phone to play V-Rally then some bimbo flight attendant told me to turn it off, I told her it was on flight mode and she threatened to take it off me if I didn't do as I asked.
Now she might have been in the right, as I have no idea what my flight mode does other than disconnect any network I'm currently connected to. Still, whats the point of having a flight mode if I can't use it in flight?

the worry is anything can interfear with the radar. But what always gets me is why no one complains about things on the ground. If my mobile phone with me talking on it lounging under the flightpath has line of sight, its going to be just as strong as if its on the ground.
I've never tried it, but i was told by an expert on cellular technology, that because of the way the vector is tracked (that means ur phone) moving between cell sites its possible for it to work at 300mph, and it does most of the time. Combined with having less objects in the way between the plain and the cell site, works very well apparently.
a simple way to test what i mean, is to put your wireless lan in the garden, so you have line of sight. It goes for miles with the right ariels, but as soon as something gets in the way, signal starts to go. I don't understand the air hostess hatred of electronic stuff. "Sir could you turn your pacemaker off, we're about to land?"

Some Far-Eastern technology needs it, no-doubt...Originally Posted by TheAnimus
There was a mention of the service in one of their in-flight mags, can't remember where though...just got back to Heathrow from Singapore yesterday morning - seriously amazing on-demand movies, tv and music. Watched Sin City, Ocean's Eleven (whyyy?), and loadsa stupid mindless american tv all night . Then got home and slept 16 hours.
Of course you need wifi in the bog. You have to browse whilst you poop.
Not around too often!
Flight mode is also known as "radio off", and it does what it says on the tin - deactivates all the comms functions of the phone and makes it run as a pda with keypad.Originally Posted by Tobeman
The fact is that the rules say "no phones switched on", because it's much less hassle to ban the lot than to check every phone one by one. You can bet there will always be at least one joker on every flight who wants to check their text messages in mid-air.
You're not even supposed to use cd and minidisc players on some flights, because of "interference" from the lasers. Crazy but true!
Mobile phone technology could be used on planes, there is no technological problem, but they interviewed business users etc, and the vast majority said they didnt want it. FLyin trans atlantic was nice to have 7 hours free from the office and communications etc.
Also airlines were worried if it goes off while people are sleeping, they are not going to be impressed.
THis is why mobile phones are not used on planes at the current time.
It is easier to have a blanket ban on things as well rather then the air crew to be experts in electronics..."ooo...you centrino laptop also has a GPRS card i notice, Im sorry but you'll have to disactivate that, but I notive that your PDA only has GPS...thats ok..."...
I have been on flights when phones go off...and its when you take off or land...mostly when you land "O2 hope you enjoy roaming in XXXXX" txt etc...
Also why do people insist on switched their phones on as soon as the seatbelt sign has gone off to say "I've just landed...nah still on the plane..." just wait 5minutes huh?
Wifi onflight is a good idea, but as with most things its far too expensive for me atm
Also unless you are in business you wont get plugs, so chances are your battery will run out before the flight ends anyway.
Mind you some serious lan gaming fun would be good...
/me imagines usb powered network hub with cables over the plane...lol

Would be fun with the DS and PSP wireless connections if a few people on the flight had them, just have to watch what you shout out!
Hexus private jet anyone?
