    Router Question......

I am about to purchase a New machine - using the second one as a games server.....

    New PC spec:

    AMD 64 4000
    Nvidia GF7800
    Asus SLI MB
    300Gb SATA
    1gb Corsair Twin XMX

    New Server spec:

    P4 3.2 EE
    Nvidia GF6800 GT
    Asus MB
    200 Gb SATA
    1GB DDR

    Connection: 8mb ADSL

Ok - I have ordered a new router/switch for the new set up - the idea being that both PC's access the internet through the Router. Unfortunately as i am unable to connect locally to a LOMAC server, my main PC is going to have to go out to come back in again.

    The router is a DLink DSL-504T ADSL Modem+Router +4 Port Switch+Firewall+VPN.

My problem is this - in the past i have used a router for ADSL connection, but found that hosting a server is nigh on impossible due to being unable to find out the IP address the router has allocated itself. Fortunately i now have a static IP, which i should be able to foward to the PC that will be acting as a server. As far as i am aware, as long as i set it up correctly inbound traffic should be able to connect no problems.

Does anyone have any experience of this? Any tips?

Failing plan 'A' working (as above!) - I will have another line installed and run the buggers separatly! As this is the more costly option - i would rather not do it this way.

Anyone got any ideas on how to set this up correctly so users can connect to my other machine? any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

or get an IP range, this way each computer on ur network can have a valid IP address on the internet.

What you need to do is set up the router to forward the appropriate ports to the server machine. That way any connections to those ports on the router get routed to the actual server.

I think DLink routers default to an IP address of 192.168.1.1? It should say anyway in the manual anyway (once the things turns up!).
