Most user stable and user friendly wireless broadband router?

Hi, soon I will be helping to set up a wireless home network in my sisters new Uni house. Therefore i really need a seriously stable wireless broadband ( modem integrated) router. At home now we have a linksys wag54g and its pretty woeful, always losing signal and connection and needing constant resets etc, which in a uni house of 5 will be an issue. The ones I have looked at so far have been Belkin routers, the reviews i have seen of them seem to be best. PLease share your views and experiences, cheers, John.

I'm a fan of Linksys myself and have the same router as you. I must admit it's been running great for me, although I tend to do everything through CAT5E. I have setup several however to work wirelessly and only encountered a problem once. The unit was replaced and no probs since.

Have you tried a firmware upgrade for your LinkSys box?

I have no experience of Belkin routers but they should be good. I've also worked with Netgear which have worked well when I have seen them but I have read mixed reviews online of Netgear.

The problem of dropped connections is well documented online and not necessarily due to the router. Have a look at http://www.overclockers.com/tips1164/index.asp

    Question

I have tried every possible thing with my router to get it to work and have read countless stories about problems with it, but i use it solely over wireless. Does anyone have experience with the belkin routers all in one 54g things? John.

I would avoid all all in one devices, I would used a Linksys WRT54GS/GX and install a 3rd party firmware, and get a seperate ADSL modem.

The nice thing about the 3rd party firmware is it introduces features generally found on routers costing £500+ - very shiny...

I would avoid Belkin and USR at all costs, I work for after sales support and see hundreds of people a day having problems with these makes....

If you dont wanna go with Linksys, then Kcorp produce very reliable and fast wireless routers.

will your method of a separate modem be more costly and how exactly would it work? does the separate modem plug into the filter before nthe router. Is it a simple process? Thanks John

I use my Linksys WRT54GS with Sveasoft firmware which I pay for on a yearly subscription, but jesus does it bring more features and performance to it! It is paired with my ntl:home 100 modem. Works a treat, unlike my Netgear WGT624 (or something) v2 router which was awful.

I have a belkin wireless modem/router. Its been excellent and only had a problem with the hardware firewall.

Rang Belkin support line and they sorted me out there and then - very very helpful. [URL=http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductInfoComm.asp?ID=9559[This one[/URL]

Netgear DG384G. Very simple setup (wizard does everything for you). Took me 15 mins to install and be up and running inc wireless connection. Help files are really easy to understand - even my dad could set the wep settings. Solid as a rock over 4 port wired cable. For general surfing etc the 54mb wireless conncetion with usb dongle was great. I even used it for WoW, although there was a bit of lag, it never dropped the connection in 3 days testing. Imho super bit of kit. All the usual firewall gubbins etc.

Amazon were doing a deal of router plus free usb wireless dongle for £66 but there maybe other deals on wireless cards plus router.

Ah, it wasn't belkin i was thinking of, I'm on about netgear having good reviews: here is an example of what i was looking for:
    http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=52244

Would this be suitable for just adding into the filter just like my all in one linksys wag54g? Thanks, any experiences with this model? John

The netgear stuff is very good. I have a belkin router, which is very good. It has an excellent signal range.

I have the WCZ problem with my Linksys PCI card on Windows XP. Ironically, I moved it into my Linux box and got it working fine using ndiswrapper, now I use that as my gateway
