    Unhappy Port Already Open...

    Hey Guys n Gals,

    a little background -

there was a thunderstorm the other night, and as a consequence a modem got fried at one of my friends house. they bought a new modem (netodragon 56k internal jobby) and asked me to install it for them.

old modem out, new modem in, driver cd in, bish bash bosh job done...

...not quite tho because if you try to connect to the ISP it tries to open the port and dial but i get an error saying 'cannot find the modem/communications device blah blah'... which i thought was strange, so i went into the modem properties and if i try to do the 'query modem' i get an error saying 'port already open'.

Its on COM5, but i tried on COM1 (it says 2/3/4 are in use), but that gave the same problem, so i tried on COM100 (just a nice high random one) and that didnt work either...

Any ideas guys? should I try re-installing the drivers - i've already tried that a few times to no avail...?

    Help!

Remove drivers, reboot, install drivers, reboot.

Failing that check for other processes that may be holding the port open (start>run>startup) then reboot again.

Sounds like it could be confliting with another device in the system.

Try reinstalling as suggested above, if that doesnt work then remove card and try it in a different pci slot and then this should all being well clear up any issues.

Tried that. Nothing obviously holding the port open - nothing in startup, nor in the registry.
