BT ups traffic allowance across its broadband

    Curtesy of Computershopper:
BT has increased the traffic allowances across its entire broadband portfolio.
The new guidelines will come into effect on 15 October and in addition to raising the limits BT will no longer penalise or charge users who exceed them; instead frequent 'offenders' are contacted with a suggestion that they move to a service with a higher limit.

The new limits are as follows: BT Broadband Basic - 2GB (currently 1GB); BT Broadband - 20GB (15GB); BT Yahoo! Broadband - the 15GB option rises to 20GB and the 30GB rises to 40GB.

More information can be gleaned from http://www.bt.com/broadband/bb_info....n=better_value

Finally they are starting to see sense, bandwidth restrictions change the product being sold, it is no longer 24/7 internet access, and no-longer what broadband has been marketed as for years. Even though its only a small move its a step in the right direction

Sorry but that's still a pathetic allowence when you look at it from any angle. Most people sign-up for broadband and LOOK at the price and do not read the smallprint for allowances etc.

For instance - has anyone used the "Online Spotlight" within Media Centre at all? A quick fiddle in here with Rieters news and the music channel thats on here can easy swallow a good Gb or so over 3 hours. Now, if you use this as "Microsoft" intend - your going to be well over the limit before you can say "broadband" really

What they should do is traffic-shaping or similar and stop the protocols that are used for P2P and the ports used as the "average" user does not know how or where to change these, thus this would of been a better solution really.

Yes its still pathetic but its getting better

Dont even think about suggesting Packet Shaping to any ISP PLEASE, that would be a stupid stupid stupid idea. Ok granted it could help stop P2P (which i am all for 100%) but how long before its used to block other things too.. After having bad experiences with packet shapers at uni i have an inbuilt hatered for them ;p

TBH though anyone who has any real knowledge about the internet/ISPS etc wouldnt use BT Broadband or any other isp with limits now would they?? Hence why we moved away from BT...although UKOnline was a bad mistake, in another 9 months we can fix that mistake too ;p

..but most the people who are getting broadband know seem to think that because your phonelines with BT that you have to have your broadband through BT as well. The sooner this is made clearer to the less technologically savvy people - such as the silver surfer brigade, the better as I've had nothing but trouble trying to explain to my parents friends that just because your phones with BT and you get a call from the offering you broadband from BTBroadband doesn't mean you have to take it

the limits mean nothing under bt, apparently, according to their official literature if you go a bit over ur limit they just suggest getting a bigger one, it is only persistant, large exceedings of the limit which brings proper consequences.

they only brought in the limits starting 1st August 2005 so you couldn't exceed it before then as it didn't exist.

Oh those poor poor people stuck with BT.
    Download bandwidth???? What`s that????
Move to a cable area and try 10Mb, no limits, and £35 a month.
Or even use your BT line but with one of the half decent other ISPs.
How the hell anybody stays with BT in these days of searchable best deals and whichever provider you want on a BT line beats me.

Because BT is not a particularly bad deal...? There are others, but what constitutes best depends on your particular requirement. There is more to choosing an ISP than on price alone

very good point, the internet has never been down with me on BT for the last 5 years. i think that is good reliability, and their customer service is good as well if you ever need it. (only used it once, so might not be accurate)

I have to query this, I've been on the 30GB limited one, and downloaded in excess of 50, 60, maybe even 70gigs of stuff in a month, and no extra charges or problems from it!

So what's the point in having a limit if it means nothing? Or have I just luckily got through a loop in the system?
