    Linux Router

I currently have 512k adsl with Nildram (which is excellent), i use a Netgear DG814 router to share the connection with 4 PC's. The DG814 is the biggest pile of crap i have ever had the misfortune to use, so i was wondering if i could employ the power of a p120 i have lying around doing nothing to do the job instead. How easy is this and would you recomend it?

    either use smoothwall or ipcop.
if u got a more powerfull pc than the p120 laying around you can have a look at clarkconnect too.

    Win95?!? I spit on thee

Definately NT4 or even something that Microsoft still have in their support arsenal cause then at least the box will be secure and not vulnerable to attack when MS drops support for NT

Installing NT would be a bad move IMHO. If any security flaws are identified you WILL be hacked, and with M$ stopping support of NT it's only a matter of time...

yep - dont forget to apply the fixes though - last time I checked they had problems with the auto updating on it ( then again my smoothwall is so stable I've not lgged onto it in 12 months ! )

...and DOS would be even quicker I remember reading something ages ago about people experimenting with a DOS firewall - IIRC the idea was that if anyone tried to hack it, it would just throw a fit and crash, so they'd never get in. Must have been annoying if you wanted a stable connection, but maybe this was before Smoothwall/etc. came along (apologies to spazman, this is completely OT from your original question )

Dont worry about it , im looking into smoothwall now! Would you recommend an external ethernet modem or an internal pci adsl modem (remember has to be PPPoA)? And would a crappy old pentium motherboad support a pci adsl modem?

    Thanx

its a while ago that i had adsl. I used smoothwall the the usb frog. Dont know if PCI adsl modems are supported under linux or not. The safest way would be going with an ethernet adsl modem.
