    Stupid house, poor wireless connection!

I have an L shaped house.

At the corner of the L is my router and modem on the ground floor. I've been living with poor wireless reception so I bought an old WRT54g from PCworld (it was new, but an old hardware version - I got 'em to reduce it to £25, so I didn't care) and stuck my new PC at the top of the L on the second floor. Far corner of the room! I also put a 5dbi gain aerial on it, as it would have been stuck behind a thick wooden desk.

Unfortunately it seems that my wireless is registering as 2 bars on windows zero service(?) bar & is around -190dBm on net stumbler...

    Not so good.

No matter where I move my aerial, unless I balance it on a fine Korean stationary box at the very edge of my desk can I get a decent signal. Is there any point upgrading either the two aerials on the linksys or the one on the receiving PC?

I hacked the firmware and stuck the power output to max (84mw) but this made no difference!

Sounds like your computer's NIC is a piece of ****e. What is it, an SMC? Get a Linksys NIC for the PC and your problems will go away.

I'm using a hawking PCI card which was chosen because it is supported under linux :- )

    Well, broadcomm

Anyway, it's driving me nuts now. If I have to get another NIC then I will - but it's the same problem with my laptop as well, both drop connections occasionally in this room. I'm about 40 feet from my router, 1 floor up, with about 2-3 walls between me and it.

I'm suprised upping the power on the router didn't help...

Is it worth getting another wifi card, better aerial or another router to bridge to upstairs?

just untangled my wireless cable from the other bundle of cables and ran it seperately out under the desk rather than through the desk holes.

Bingo, zero point is almost 90%

Get a custom firmware for your router, mine is running at 400% power output, so perfect signal even in the kitchen.
