Can you get a gigabit adsl router?

I know very little on the subject and maybe should ahve spent more time looking for previous questions of this nature. But anyway...

Does anyone know if and where you can buy a router with:

    - 4 ports or more
    - Gigabit ethernet
    - adsl modem built in
    - Decent port forwarding

We currently have one that cost £30 a year ago thats really reliable but only 100mbps and wont let me forward ports at all which is very annoying.

No they don't make them. Even 100base is overkill for most home users, and most businesses have seperate hardware because they need the flexibility.

You'll have to buy a seperate switch, and it won't be cheap for a good one. Keep in mind that CAT 5 is required, and you need to watch your cable lengths at that.

Dlink make a ADSL Router with Gigabit switch

D-Link Wireless 108MBPS Gaming Router - 802.11g With 4 Port Gigabit Switch - £105 on Ebuyer, but you would have to buy a seperate modem.

Netgear GS108 8 X 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch £60 again on ebuyer, but as StormPC said, a tad overkill for a home network...

Ok then, out of interest what is normal throughput on a 100mbit connection?

Theoretically 100mpbs is 12.5MB/s but whats the real speed usually?

Real-world performance of 100base is about 6-8Mbps throughput.

I get peaks of 20~Mbps through my d-link 8 port gigabit switch (both comps have gig nic's obviously)

Thats good to know, i dont see how thats overkill when transferring large files, its obviously not needed for everday things though.

Gig NICs only help if both computers and switches are 1000Mbps. With a 100Mbps switch the 1000Mbps NICs have no advantage over a 100Mbps NIC.

I;ve used gig netwroking before with my mates Linksys 5 port gig switch, this worked ALOT faster than 100mbs. We used it with a linksys 100mb router, and its a really good setup, the best way to go if you want gig networking.

i get about 250-300mbit on my d-link gigabit switch, which is worth it for large file transfer (e.g. multi-gig backups)

That makes no sense. What are you saying? That you used 1000Mb NICs and a 100Mb switch, or a 1000Mb switch (Gig switch)?

You mean like the person whos post you quoted? Or am I missing something.

I would like gigabit ethernet but that would mean yet another box and psu (already have an adsl router AND a wireless router chained together)!

The D-Link Wireless 108MBPS Gaming Router - 802.11g With 4 Port Gigabit Switch is £105 maybe I should sell my existing kit

One of us is definitely missing something.

Can you please tell me what you are saying in english? Sarcasm does not work well on the web.

gigabit devices connected to a gigabit switch connected to 100basetx router. doesn't seem like a complex concept.

Oh, sorry. I read it again and now I understand. I thought he was saying something else. My bad.

Yes, I agree with him 100% although gig LAN does nothing for internet access.

There was no sarcasm and I thought my comments about my own network were fairly easy to understand.

looks like the only way to do it would be to buy a router/modem that supports port forwarding and then get a gigabyte switch. i recomend the linksys one that Trippledence was talking about as its nice and does the job!
also like people have mentioned you need CAT5e or CAT6 networking cable to support gig networking (iirc) and gig NIC's
