    Networked PC Question

I normally use Windows Remote Desktop to control, restart or shutdown several networked PC's on a Workgroup LAN.

Problem: How to restart or bootup a PC that has been shutdown?

Is it anything to do with something called 'Wake on Lan'?

    Thanks in advance.

I use WOL to remotly restart several racks of mounted PC's in our comms room. Basicially you need the MAC address of each PC which allows you to start them from any PC on the same LAN. If you are working over WAN however you will also need the IP address which means you have to give them static IP's. Personlly I just leave the bat files on a server in the comms room and then use WINAT to kick of the batch files from any pc on our network, and as such can leave the PC's using DHCP.

    Little Util here: http://www.matcode.com/wol.htm

Another really useful uitl for shutting down multiple PC's at the same time and doing loads of other stuff is : http://www.beyondlogic.org/solutions...BeyondExec.htm

    Thanks for this.

I understand that there is a physical cable between the NIC and the motherboard???

Well the Nic is either intergrated in the motherboard or as an add in pci card, the Nic is programmed to 'listen' for a specific sequence and when it hars it it then sends a comand to the motherboards power management to initiate a power up basically, it's been part of most motherbaords for a good few years now I think. Obviously there is a certain issue if your NIC is add in pci based, as generally when the machine is in standby mode PCI is powered down and so WOL will not work

I've had a quick search on ebuyer, but can't find any wake on LAN capable wireless network cards. Don't suppose this is one is it (in case I missed something) ?

So it's only wired cards that have WOL?

iirc the specification for WOL dosen't give them much juice, as such i'd be very suprised if they managed to make a WOL wireless card.

besides, wireless is for pdas, tablets, and laptops, desktops which you want to be able to remotely turn on, deserve wire.

Also the problem is that for WOL to work the NIC port needs to be powered even in standby to monitor for the sequence which activates it, with an add in card when you press the off button the power to these is usually cut as well

I thought I had read somewhere that the PC has to be in standy or hibernate mode in order for the WOL to work - but then I could have mis-understood!!

Yes thats right, with modern pc's when you press the power button it isn't physically shutting off the power, it's just in standby mode so the motherboard is still getting power, as is the intergrated NIC, thats why the network lights still flash on networked PC's that are off and so enables it to monitor for the WOL signal.

thats upto the router to forward the packet, some do, some drop, some even give options to let you configure such packets.... most don't.

The WOL cable for PCI NICs is a three-pin jobby, much like the ones you get for a HSF at the fan end (not the mobo end). It looks like a 3-pin version of the old-style CD drive audio connector.

Any non-ancient PC should support WOL and powering the PCI bus won't be a problem. As Olly said, power isn't completely off on a newish PC. That's what the 5V standby power rail is for

Of course, if you have a really really ancient PC with an AT power supply, then it's a different story

How (method or instructions) did you get the wired PC to WOL from wireless PC?

I log onto my router settings page, select my PC, then click "wake up".
