internet going REALLY slow at home... router reset will fix it.

yo guys,

been having problems with home network. Here's the setup:

cable modem plugged into MSI router (will post the model when I get home, don't have it on hand).

Out of the router, 3 PCs connected via CAT5 cable, and one PC connected via wireless.

Quite often, the internet will start running really, really slow on all PCs on the network. A quick log into the router, and reset it - and we're back on track - full speed ahead.

This doesn't happen all the time, but at least once every few hours.

We CANNOT figure out what could be causing the problem if a simple reset of the router fixes it.

2 PCs do run Azereus, and we've noticed this slows down activity on the network quite significantly. We switch Azereus off, and it's all back to normal.

Any ideas as to where to start troubleshooting? Take all PCs of the router, and put one back in at a time?

Azereus uses multiple ingoing and outgoing connections. It maxes out both your download and your upload if you allow it two, and with two instances your even more likely to have this happen, since you've got two peoples entire lists of torrents trying to be downloaded.

I would suggest you work out what 85% of your total download is, do the same for upload. Then split both those figures in two, and set them as your max upload and download in each instance of azereus. With 15% of your upload and download free, you should get a smooth internet performance. Of course it might just be that your router doesn't have the guts to handle a very large number of simoltanious connections, in which case you have a problem, cos thats how Bittorrent works. So you'd need to upgrade your router or stop using Bittorrent.

I assume Azereus is some sort of P2P. If it is you should understand that P2P is a very risky activity. I suggest you stop stealing music and programs (the only reason to have P2P) and simply buy them.

Dude, why are you so confrontational? Im currently using azereus to download the bf2 patch, seeding knoppix + the opencd and also the brothers in arms demo. None of which are illegal in any way. learn something before you start calling people theives.

The fact that you had to answer the way you did tells me that's not all you do with it. Never-the-less, P2P is risky, which is my point. Don't miss it because you feel guilty about your conduct. Actually, you should not feel guilty because if you were the only one who ever stole what would police officers do? Where would wardens work? ;)

Right there you state that everyone who uses p2p software is a thief.

Quantify exactly how all p2p is in anyway 'risky' as i said, i use bittorent for game demos episodes of the broken/red vs. blue etc., and linux isos exclusively, all of which are perfectly legal and not in the slightest bit risky (well, some of hacking with ramzi might be but thats not the point)

Anyway, i cba with a flame war so, to the op, probably whats happening is your routers outbound 'buffer' (theres probably some technical term for it) is getting full with outgoing data from bittorrent, causing http data etc to get forgotten about, resetting will flush the buffer. This happens because if left to its default settings azereus will upload at around 300k/s which if youve got 2 machines + http traffic is hugely oversaturating your outgoing connection. Try throttling the upload speeds down to something more like 1/2 your upload speed (combined, so if you have 2 machines go for 1/4 your upload speed)

I used to get this problem all the time - my internet would last about 2 hours tops then either disconnect or go really slow. I found the solution to be the ruddy filters - too many of them somehow introduces noise/does something to the signal. So I unplugged all the filters (except the one into the router) and the problem was solved!

You might as well try and see if it works, it worked for me.:)

I sorted out the lack of phones problem by buying a quad portable phone set and plugged that into the filter.

Look Storm, theres no need to be so millitant out here, P2P applications like Bearshare and Limewire are the real risky ones as these come with spyware out of the box.

With torrent P2P applications the only "risk" is where you get these torrents from, so as long as you're on a clean site like "Mininova" which has legitimate software torrents and is a generally well looked after site, then you can expect there not to be any risks...

That said in regards to the worm allegation, if you're not net savvy enough to know roughly how large the average film trailer or game demo is or you don't keep a range of anti-spyware applications installed then you deserve to be punished for your ignorance...


P.S. And besides, anyone on the internet can say they don't download the latest film recorded in a cinema or whatever, but words are nothing, they're almost weightless, only the person who says he doesn't knows for sure what he downloads so please stop throwing around allegations unless you can prove without shadow of a doubt that the accused can be found guilty...

P.S.S. I also just finished downloading the F.E.A.R. multiplayer demo, the Call of Duty 2 demo, Serious Sam 2 Demo and the BF2 v1.03 patch...so there are legitamate reasons to have a torrent downloading client on your PC afterall eh Storm :D

I am hesitant to beleive the problem is wholly attributed to Azureus. This problem happens often even when Azursus is not running.

I don't think it is, personally. I <gasp> walk that terrible tightrope of P2P and never have such problems. I did have a router die on me, slowly, and my net speed would gradually grind to a halt over a few hours.

It might not all be azureurs(or whatever that things calld, most annoying name evah!), it might just be your router not liking more then say 20 simultaneous inbound and outbound connections.

Do this test if you will, on all the computers that use the router, when its going normally, goto start>run and type in "cmd".

Then type in netstat -n, that'll bring up a list of IP addresses your connected to. Copy down the number of IP's your connected to(and by that I mean, mabye 15 or 20, not the IP's themselves).

Once you've done that on all the computers connected to the router, wait untill the slow thing happens, then do it again.

Do this for maybe 5 times for both slow and fast. Compare the numbers, if the number of connections is considerably higher every time your internet is crawling along, then your problem is your router.

Apoligies if you've already done that, but its something that might help if you havn't.

You can always limit the number of connections in the preferences...

managed to borrow a Netgear router from work today (WGR614) - going to test with this over the weekend...

I very much doubt it's Azureus causing the problem, so to whoever said it was that is most probably very wrong.

In my opinion find out what's going on, if there's a dodgy process. Go into command prompt and do a netstat. To find the options just do "netstat ?" and it'll list all the flags available to see what you require. It could also be something up with the router, it's always best to update it with the latest firmware and check it's all configured correctly :)

I still think it'd be worth following my IP comparrison idea, it'll take a while, but just do it a few times over the next few days, and it fairly easily tells you if the problem is too many connections.

It's not Azureus itself (but it could be the way you use it), it's the nice presents people sometimes send you even when you don't ask for them. SHOCKING!!!

Torrents check everything you get sent against a hash code, if the thing doesn't match then it gets rejected and most clients will ban the IP. So Virii and trojans can't be surrupstiously spread using bit torrent.

It would be nigh on impossible to spread a virus using a torrent, due to the hash key that stops anything that doesn't match its hash being used. People can't just magic anything they want onto your system using Bit Torrent.

You ban an IP for sending stuff that fails the hash check because its useless data, if you kept downloading useless data from them it slows the swarm down, it makes your download longer, so its useless. Thats why you ban the IP. Shadows Client, along with uTorrent(AFAIK) both ban clients, I think ABC does as well.

What I dislike from you is the spreading of mindless fiction, when you make it fairly clear you know little about the of bit torrent or P2P as a whole.

Usually there's a statistics page with graph showing bandwidth usage, if not you could get one from somewhere I assume. Use one and just as the download / upload rates become slow, check the graph and see whether the net usage has stooped low or increased. If it's increased then I imagine there's something using your net connection, if it stoops low then it could be possibly due to a bad microfilter or a numerous amount of different possibilities.

Wrong, if there's a virus within the actual content that the torrent relates to then you'll download a virus willingly. StormPC isn't necesarrily talking about data being passed on the same port as bit-torrent.

I took that to mean he was implying people could send randon data(with Virii), or replace data from a tracker with a Virus. It would be extremely hard to do this, and isn't something that I've ever heard of happening. You can request data, that you think is something, and it can be something else, this I won't deny.

Surely you are only likely to see viruses in a downloaded torrent if the content is of the dodgy nature alluded to earlier in this thread.

I see a lot of reputable demo sites have switched to torrents recently, my copy of the Serious Sam 2 demo was obtained via torrent, I forget which site I got it from(I think I got the link from here :) ). I beleive for the site in question it is a great way of moving the load from their servers after the initial rush download, and keeping the file in circulation. I only wish Fileplanet would move with the times and offer a torrent rather than their annoying method they have now. :mad:

As the sites themselves are reputable I would not expect to receive anything containing a virus and if the chance existed it would be the same chance of downloading the file from the same site via traditional methods, i.e. not a fault of bittorrent itself.

Getting back to the original topic after the derail, having used Azureus myself I don't find any bandwidth hogging and have played games whilst it does it's job (although usually i only download small files of a mb or two). I do find it's a bit of a memory hog sometimes though. That said I use a dedicated pc as a gateway and not a router.

Yeah it does mate. Obviously there are some(none non-member sites that I know off) that do check all their torrents for Virii. Also obviously, when downloading a patch from an official game developers website, via bit torrent(which is peer to peer, on a grand scale) there is almost no chance of getting a virus. If you were to virus scan everything that you downloaded, and read the comments of every torrent before getting it, then your chances of getting a virus would be significantly reduced too.

I like azerus - but like anything, you should check the key and virus check it after. Its saved me a hell of a lot of time - i'd still be downloading fedora and debian iso's without it :D

and yes, the best way to protect your computer is to disconnect it and switch it off, but thats a bit useless - you can even get infected just by being on the net, firewall or not.

btw, I have the same prob, I don't run azerus, except overnight and only after new iso's have been released - and the router slows after about 2-3 months, thats why i'm not too worried about it! Itsa s shame you can't stop the downloading of dodgy stuff, and could bring it down to a reasonable price instead.
