    Wireless Router Advice.

    Hi,

I'm currently searching the market for Wireless Routers. I play online gaming and Network gaming in my home. (football manager 2005 and Counter Strike )

I would like 108megs wireless conection buy am i really going to see a major difference with 54megs?

Anyway i was look at the netgear routers DG834GT and the DG834G.

I also like the look of the Draytek wireless routers as we have the wired version at work. The menu is great on them routers!!!!

    What do you think guys??

    Darren,

I've used a wireless router/adsl/etc, from Dyanmode, with a wireless USB dongle on a laptop.

Just want to mention in my experience that the throughput between two devices on the same hub, from wired to wireless is slow - it could be the router, but could also be that wireless has a problem with high throughput. It was when I was copying about 200MB - it was easier to plug the wire back in again.

Just wanted to mention it as it may affect game play. I haven't tried gaming over it.

    Mine is 54 Meg.

    Matt

so probably the best thing is just to have the laptops on the wireless network as they are only for browsing the net?

I have the DG834G, and am very happy with it. Two machines are on the wired hub, the rest are connected over WiFi. I find it fine for gaming, etc... Only thing i'd consider getting the 108 model for is large file transfers ~ these can be slow over the WiFi connections.

It's all money, though, and you'd also need to get 108 cards, too...

im currently using this router http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/s...tml?NOV-54ADSL i was abit put off by the unbrandedness but its really good, easy to configure (even has preset rules you can apply for some games) and pritty good range too. it supports all the normal stuff like wep and wpa, and has loads of advanced features that you can keep playing with for days

    I've had enough of speedtouch!!!!

    I have a 510V4.

I'm also a Network support techy and it took me ages to get the firmware sorted on that router. Once i got the firmware sorted it (a) lost my settings, not much of a problem (b) wouldnt let me in the router with my password or factory password!!!! THEN....(c) took me ages to find out how to do a factory reset on it, which i can tell you wasnt easy!!!!!!

Now if a regular home user was to try that then they would have no chance!!!! Routers should be made easy enough for your mum to configure it.

I'm going down the Netgear or Draytek route for sure. Draytek have some great features in their software and netgear have the same but its made all simple.

    (gasssp) rant over

i've got a netgear DG834G and i am very impressed with it, it was a bit unstable at first, but a quick firmware upgrade (and it was quick) has made it solid as a rock. I definately recomend Netgear, that said i'd rather have a draytek if i had the money.

I really like my Linksys WAG54G, theres a new virsion out now I think with an ADSL modem, any way. Its only 54g, which is fine for most things other than moving files around, you can alwase plug your laptop onto the router for doing that.

Wired is alwase going to be that little bit better, but wirless isnt as much hassle as it was, esspechaly with SP2.

    This is what you want.

    http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satel...VisitorWrapper

Use WPA-PSK and you're pretty darn secure, and my download times on my 54mbps lappy are only slightly more (less than 2%) than my 100base wired desktop.

Also, if you use wireless for your desktops buy a good PCI card like a Linksys. DO NOT BUY AN SMC!!!

Draytek if you have the money. Do a search for Draytek, there was a thread here the other day about them, and the general opinion was that they were the dogs danglies if you could afford the 2600G. I'm getting one

Speedtouch are the only network related hardware manufacturer we get issues with from customers at work. We've had a couple of netgear and one d-link but those were user problems. Plenty of speedtouch problems were fixed by a replacement unit.

Draytek 2600G are great. My work provides me with one for home use and its been really reliable. Its only 54 Mbits/S but you don't need anymore for gaming.

Only issue I've had, is that the wirless drops out every now and again but none of my collegues at work have reported that problem so I think it's just my one.

i've had both dg834g and dg834gt and would say they are probably the easiest routers to use, their fairly easy to set up and the signal strength is nearly always 85% in my house and i've even connected my laptop from a neighbour's house over ther road.

54mb is fine as your internet connection will no way fill up your network bandwidth
