Does anyone know any good progs to monitor the actual speed of a wireless connection, What i've got at present just tells me whats its speed technically should be, i.e 54 etc.

well you could just transfer a big file over your network and see what it settles
down to. If you want to find out how well it works in reality.

Your actual wireless speed depends on many things. When you see your connection speed in Windows you are seeing potential, not actual throughput.

What are you actually wanting to find out?
