    Lacking bandwidth

    Hi,

I am seeking some guidance please! I have recently got broadband connected and the download speed is a tenth of what it should be.

The reason I can say a tenth is because after running multiple broadband tests, they all say download 240k, upload 240k. The upload speed is correct for a 2 meg line but the download speed is awful!!!

    I have this netgear router,
    http://www.netgear.co.uk/wireless_br...er_dg834gt.php

    this wireless laptop card,
    http://www.netgear.co.uk/wireless_ne...ard_wg511t.php

    and this wireless desktop card,
    http://www.netgear.co.uk/wireless_ne...ard_wg311t.php

The network is running at 108mb when transfering files between each other so that part of the router is working fine.

I have tried opening ports 50000 to 50050 and setting ABC to look at those ports but I have not got anything above 3k per sec.

Browsing the internet is chronically slow too.

If anyone has any ideas or anything I can look into, I would be greatly appreciated.

Might want to confirm your exchange isnt overloaded, http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php

Fill in details and check status. At one point earlier in the year over 12% of BT's exchanges had their virtual pipe links on status red!

    It could be several things:

The first one is an issue with the ISP - which ISP do you have.

Second it could be due to using wireless, have you tried using the system using a normal wire connection? I have one PC at home and one laptop (on wireless) and the wireless connection is normally half what it should be (due to signal loss etc)

Third it could be the online speed test that your using I would recomend that use the speedtest on adslguide.org as this normally gives a good indication.

Also depending on the ISP your using a few of the ISPs are now throttling the use of P2P apps (especially torrents) I know Plusnet have also started to do this, however it could be to do with the ports not being forwarded correctly from the router, have you forwarded the relevant ports on the router you have?

    Regards,

Thanks for replying guys. I havn't been using the internet cause its been soo slow.

I have tried the link and this is what it says...
Congratulations, you are in a broadband enabled area.
However, there appears to a compatibility issue with your phone line. This could be caused by an existing broadband connection, ISDN, a DACS unit, TPON, a pending ADSL order or many other common issues.

    1) I have eclipse ISP.

I have tried using a modem and it works fine so I don't think its the line, but I didn't run the speed test on it when it was plugged in. (flatmate did it and told me it went quick.)

    2) On my network, I have the router connecting one computer via Cable and 3 others via wireless. The wired computer runs the same speed as the wireless ones.

    3) Thats the speed test site that I have been using.

What ports should I be using? I was reading a site that says open ports 6850 - 6999 but another site said they were too common and banned by some torrent users. So i set to 50000 - 50050 and got ABC to look at it. Does it really matter what ports I open as long as another app isnt using them?

My plan of action is to reset the router and create the network from scratch. My flatmate set it up so hopefully he did something wrong but I dont think so. I think its worth a try.

Any other ideas? Thanks again for the help guys.

Raise the issue with Eclipse's customer support organisation.

what I@m sure you dont want to hear is that even though you are not getting a 2 meg service , BT isn't oblidge to do anythign about it.

Domestic ASDL has a 50:1 contention ratio , which essentially means that it can be 1/50th of the quoted speed and there isn't much you can do about it.

When you run the speed test , are you the only machine thats connected to the network ?
are you sure that your flatmate isn't whoring all your bandwidth already ?

is your router running the latest firmware ? - have you done a factory reset on it ( these are questions you will get asked by the ISP )

Just done a factory reset and the firmware is the most up to date. I clicked factory reset and then clicked setup wizard and entered the internet login.

Did a speed test and got,
    Down: 355Kb (44k per sec)
    Up: 245Kb (30k per sec)

Only machine connected is this laptop via cable.

I take it this is definately an eclipse problem?

It doesn't come on by default.
I set it to 128 bit.

My thoughts were that someone could be using all of our bandwidth so I was going to see if i could switch the wireless part off but couldnt find anything that would let me do it.

I tried the modem instead of the router and ran the speed test. Got about the same speed.

I have tried the speed test under SuSE linux 9.2 on the same laptop via cable. The speed comes out at about 120Kb.

Is there any other tests I can do?

I'll post back and write what they say.

    Thanks for all the help.
