BT say only 512kbps ADSL - 1Mbps surely?

When you query http://www.bt.com/broadband/ it indicates that the line will only support 512Kbps. However, when another number on the same property is queried it indicates 1Mbps is supported

The property is 3.09km from the exchange (according to Samknows). Another friend can get 1Mbps and he lives further from his exchange and his router stats aren't as good.

BT aren't interested in the line attenuation/noise margin and have refused to budge from what their system shows (512).

    Any ideas please?

the difference between the two lines at the same address isn't that surprising. The second twisted pair might be in better conditon, or be configured and connected differently. I have read about people getting a second line installed so adsl would work properly, think it was over at adslguide.org.uk forums or something.

You can get discrepancies with a router reading and the actual reading..
It's possible that your attenuation is a fair bit higher than what your router says, and ditto your SNR may be lower than that.

Best way to check this is to verify this is to request a whoosh test from BT. Even so, i've heard other stories whereby actually getting BT to up the speed is a nightmare.

Assuming those figures to be accurate, they should be fine for 1Mbps, though.
Check out mine (i'm on 1 meg)

    hi hoodmeister
How far would you say you are from your exchange and do you find that you have any connection errors and which isp are you with. i am with BT and have the same figures, noise margins are a bit higher on a netgear dg834g with a good connection no errors but can`t get BT to upgrade me for love or money.

I'm a very long way from my exchange... I live out in the sticks...

My ISP is PlusNet, but that shouldn't hold any sway over what speed you get. This one is pretty much in the hands of BT...

That said, I have heard tales of Zen swinging higher speeds, but I don't know how much truth there is in these...

My line occasionally drops, but the DG834G brings it back up again very quickly ~ usually within 10 seconds.

if BT decide you wont get a better speed , you wont get one unless your exchange gets unbundled.

we had all sorts of hassles where BT decided they woudn't give more than 512 on a line , yet the next door firm got 2 meg.

    Ohhh, thats nothing people !
Just wait for the day you go from 2 meg, down to 512 because you wont be using at as much, then having them tell you that the line wont support 1 meg, dispite the line stats being the same

    Gotta love BT....

    Thanks for the help.

The existing 512 service with BT Broadband will be migrated to Eclipse on 23/10. When it's all up an running an attempt for a regrade to 1Mbps will be made (hopefully the BT checker will have been updated by then).

What i can`t under stand is that i am happy to pay them to do it and if it don`t work fine put me back to 512k they are on to a winner what ever happens. ?

Well, with your noise margin @ 20Db I wouln't expect 1Mbps to be a problem, im on 2Mbps BT Broadband, but its been rubbish latley - the highest my noise margin has been for about 2 weeks is 7Db - although everything's fine until the eveninig when it drops to about 2Db and then I can connect for max. 5mins.

The stats would indicate that 2MB should be possible as normally with the doubling of speed the SNR margin goes down by around 6 - 8 Db.

This according to the router would give you around 12Db which should be ok, however if the router is giving false information BT may not increase the speed as they are now apparently taking around 10 Db to be a safe limit for most connections.

I would suggest that you contact BT and ask nicely to do a Woosh or FAST line test and see what there manual system indicates for the line.

I've recently migrated over to Tiscali. They've put me on a 512k line because they say they can't put me on a 1mb line, even though I've been using a 1mb line for 2 years with Freedom2Surf and Supanet. After MANY emails about it, I asked them to give me my MAC so I could leave the god forsaken ISP....guess what...they support inbound migrations, but not outbound. So I'm either going to have to wait until Tiscali get their act together or cancel my account, sign up with Plus.net and be without the internet for nearly 2 weeks.

IIRC they have to provide you with a migration code (according to ofcom or whatever its called now) althoguh i may be wrong, think it depends if they own the exchange equipment

    I'll look into that, thanks

    EDIT: Here's what ofcom say

    Migration Process

The process works by means of a migration authorisation code (“MAC”) which customers obtain from their existing provider and give to the new provider they have chosen. Customers need to follow three steps:

    1. A customer wishing to change their service provider must first contact their existing service provider and request a MAC (customers should not request the service be ceased)
    2. The existing service provider will send the MAC to the customer within 5 working days. The MAC is valid for a period of 30 days from the date that it is issued.
    3. The customer must then present the MAC to the provider they wish to migrate to. The gaining provider will then process the request and inform the customer of the transfer date.

Note: See below for details of the service providers who have signed this code. These providers have committed to fully comply by 16 August 2004.
    Customers' rights and obligations

Under the terms of the code:

    * The existing service provider cannot unreasonably refuse to issue an authorisation code and may only withhold a code if:
o the request is not made by the account holder or the account holder is deceased
o the contract has already been terminated and the connection ceased
    However, the existing service provider must explain the reasons and supply information on how to appeal against the decision;
    * The existing service provider cannot withhold an authorisation code to enforce debt collection or contractual rights. However, customers are not freed from contractual obligations they have entered in to with their existing service provider - i.e.: they will have to honour the remaining term of an existing contract or pay early cancellation fees, if applicable. An existing service provider will still be able to take reasonable action to enforce their contractual rights even after a customer has migrated to a new service provider.

I'm still in my first month of the contract. However, I was told that I would be able to upgrade to 1mb broadband with no problems at all (by sales AND customer services) so they either give me my MAC or a kick up a fuss, yeah?
