    Switches

Looking at the Netgear FSM750S for £385 or the FSM7352S for £400.

Need a managed 48port switch, looking at this kind of price range and specs similar to the above, anyone had any experiance of Netgear stuff or anything else in the same kind of range?

They aren't the deepest in terms of management , but I suspect that your network of the level that would warrent more than a good old layer 2 jobbie.

the layer 3 switch will do a lot more , and it also has more gigbit ports , which may be of use to connect your servers / other switches to.

not bad for £15 more !

I was almost going to put something about you being the 1st to reply lol...

I want something thats going to work and at least give me some level of feedback as to whats going on as far as the network goes so if theres an error at least it'll tell me what port its on so I can track it down a bit, as it stand here atm theres naf all way of finding problems unless you unplug things which the users tend to complain about....

I found the HP Procurve 2650 to be a very handy managed switch, with the two GBIC/1000 ports too. Not bad for the price, and it's nice to get that kind of switch density. If you're getting multiples, they can be linked together for easier management too.

Oooo now that does seem tempting, would rather use HP than Netgear and check out this price...

they are nice bits of kit - I've used them in a couple of different places and been pretty happy with them.

only thing to note is that the gig ports are add ons (IIRC, might just be fibre bits im thinking of, or i might be thinking of a 2524) so factor that into the cost if you need them

Not bothered about the GB ports atm, just want to get on a managed network so I can start to find out why our WMS keeps kicking people off of the system, at least with this it'll tell me a rough direction to be looking in.

On hold atm anyways, the phone people are doing a data/VO-IP link to our new warehouse and there putting some Cisco kit in so I might be able to blag some of that for my use, I'm sure the Telecoms Manager wont mind

Oh, hang on, thats me too

The gig ports on the 2650 are there, they're copper 1gb ports though. It has space for two mini-GBIC ports which you add-on if you want a fiber connection.

Cisco switches are a pain to use... I've never bought a switch that didn't work until you did some config on it from any other vendor.

I had a dell powerconnect unit that needed some tweaking once , but I suspect that was because it was 2nd hand.

Have spoken to the phone guys and they can either supply some Cisco kit to do the job or plug straight into our existing network so I'll go pick one of the HP's up later..

    Cheers for the help guys
