    Question X-Box Live Problem

I have a Tesco Broadband and a Speedtouch modem which is connected to my computer through USB. Then I have a Netgear WGR614v4 wireless router which is connected to my computer through an Ethernet port. I also have a Netgear WGE101 wireless ethernet bridge which is connected to my Xbox. Xbox Live is installed, I have an account and I have had Xbox Live working before. I am trying to get the router to wirelessly connect to the ethernet bridge but everytime i try to play Xbox Live it says 'DNS ERROR'. I tried setting the DNS Server settings to automatic but it didnt work so I phoned up Tesco Broadband and i entered the DNS servers manually on the Xbox Network Setup page and on the computer which the router is connected to. Is there anything I am doing wrong?

    Any Ideas?

    Thanks!

It sounds like your xbox is on the network but not connected to the internet. This wouldn't surpise me as your internet is not being shared to your network. You can solve this problem two ways.

    1. Stop using your speedtouch modem and connect to the internet using your netgear router. Then set your xbox's dns and gateway to be the address of your router and give your xbox an ip in the same subnet as your router. For example, if your router's ip is 192.168.0.1, then set your xbox ip to be 192.168.0.xxx where xxx can be any number between 2 and 254.

    2. Use your computer to share your internet connection by following the advice on this web site http://www.xbox.com/en-AU/live/start...basedmodem.htm
except when it says use a crossover cable don't bother and connect to your router instead of your xbox.

Method 2 requires your pc to be on for your xbox to connect so i would advise method 1.

ICS wont work with an xbox, so basically your up a certain creek without a paddle, as you cant use that router to connect to an adsl line. You need one with a built in dsl modem. When did you have live working? Were you formerly on cable?

OK. My first piece of advice assumed your router had a modem installed. However, we can adapt that adice by using your Speedtouch modem. By plugging your speedtouch modem into your netgear router using an rj45 network cable. You netgear router should have 5 network ports. 4 together and one slightly seperated. You should plug the network cable into the slightly seperated port. Using another cable connect your pc to the router using one of the four remaining ports. Then follow the instructions that came with your router to configure your internet. If you can get your PC to connect to the internet then all you need do is setup your xbox is set up its ip address, gateway and dns as before.

Or despite what herulach says you can use ICS. Go to http://www.xboxemea.com/playtogether/xboxlivemanual/
for some basic help. I would recommend you try to get the first method working as it's much neater.

I don't know why there's the claim that ICS doesn't work with XBox - I've used XBox live over an ICS connection - I'm sure I've seen some instructions on it from Microsoft if you hunt around (though I don't know where exactly). In fact, my XBox used to be connected to the net via another PC which bridged a wireless and wired connection, and the wifi connection gave connection to the other PC with ICS enabled which had a USB ADSL modem... not exactly the tidiest connection, but it worked. The XBox had an IP address like 192.168.0.5 and the gateway would have been set to 192.168.0.1.
Not sure what ports need to be open/forwarded for xbox live, if any, though.

the official help page is actually quite good at sorting these things out.

if you boot up www.xbox.com and head for the live section, the links to sort out connection problems will be there (can get you a direct link as site is down for maintenance).

let us know how you get on.

This was just from personal experience, i couldnt see any guide and couldnt get it working despite a ridiculous amount of tinkering time. However this was not long after release so i could have been pre guide

    After changing and entering settings i finally got past the dns problem.........now it is saying;
    'Network Error
Could not connect to Xbox Live. Check these possible options:
    - If you connect through a router, verify that th Maximun Transmission Unit (MTU) size on the router is set to 1365 or greater.
    - If you connect through a PC using Internet Connection Sharing(ICS), see www.xbox.com/connect for more information.
    - Your ISP may require additional steps to use Xbox Live. See www.xbox.com/connect for information specific to your ISP.'
So I can get past 'cables connected', 'Ip settings configured' and now even 'Dns resolved' but there is a red circle on 'Xbox live not found.'
I have looked through the possible options above and have ruled out the second one, because i am connected via a router and ethernet bridge, and i have ruled out the third one because I have already played Xbox Live before on the same ISP. So i thought it had to be the third one, then after searching on google i found out how to change the MTU, but when i went to change it with DrTCIP i found out that my MTU size was already above 1365, it was 1500. Then i read in another forum about changing your MTU size to 1496,so i tried that and it still came up the same error message on my xbox. I phoned up Xbox Consumer Support and the only help they gave me was they told me to open the following ports on my firewall: UDP 88, UDP 3074, TCP 3074. Then when i went to open these ports i realised they had already been opened. So i have everything i have been told to do, done. Is there something else i need to do that i have missed?
