    Blueyonder's Modem Gaffe

It's been like a month now since I was "upgraded" to 10mbit but I only got speeds of no more than 4mbit regardless of how many tests I did or applied fixes it was to no avail.

I kept asking BY's technical support whether it was the Webstar cable modem (which they provided) or line that was causing my problem.

But they insisted that nothing was wrong with it even when I had tested it on at least 3 different PCs and kept getting the same slow speeds.

So in a last ditched attempt to sort it out, a m8 of mine (who's also on BY and is experienced with cable modems) came around and see if he could fix it.

When he saw what modem I had he was pretty shocked BY provided me with it because they're supposed to be like the worst ones you can get.

He said that was probably why I was getting such crap speeds, so luckily he brought a spare motorola modem (meant to be one of the best) and hooked that up and you can guess what speed I was getting, BLOODY 10mbit!

If I had told him the manufacturer of the modem much earlier he would've diagnosed the problem straight away and I coud've saved myself so much grief in the long run.

He mentioned BY may have known about the problem with those Webstar modems but gave it anyway as a tactic to reduce congestion on their network.

When I get the chance I'm gonna berate them over the phone (lol) because I always knew it wasn't me that was causing the problem and they made me go through all that hassle for nothing.

I'm just mentioning this for anyone else who may go with BY's 10mbit service and has the same problem that I did with that modem.

I have a WebStar and have asked BY many a time to swap for a Motorola and they will not budge - I have the same problem as you also, I get around 5mbs and thats max! The only other thing I can suggest is buying your own modem (they aint _that_ expensive these days!)

I have the motorola modem and you are lucky if you see above 600KB/s on the line, you will never hit the full potential of the 10mbit line

Well both my friend and I are using the Motorola SB5100 SURFboard cable modem and getting 10mbit consistently with no problems at all.

Sorry to hear that you and your m8 are getting robbed on the speeds.

I dont think you guys are the only ones having problems on the Newcastle Exchange which I'm assuming you're on.

Yeah I think ours is in New York which links off to the Newcastle / Gateshead exchange. Will have a look at that link.

Well I'm hung off a Benwell UBR, have a Webstar DPX100 and am consistently hitting the top whack on the 10mbit service. The Webstar's been spot on after my ancient SB3100 went kaboom a year or so ago.

They may not have originally anticipated hitting the speeds their NTL kneejerks are forcing them to market now, so the original modems with a 10mbit WAN port would have sufficed at that point.

    4mbit though.... it was a killer! ;-)

The modem they originally provided me with was the EPC2100 which assuming is one of Webstar's worst models available hehe.

By all means 4mbit is great but obviously I wasn't getting the 10mbit service I was paying for and the only thing that annoyed me the most out of the whole thing was them making me run around in circles thinking I was at fault .

But damn 10mbit is a god send and btw BY poos all over your ISPs .

I actually had the same kind of runaround when my original SB3100 went boom. I was telling them for weeks that the modem was goosed, and even the tech that came out to check everything was absolutely certain the modem wasn't at fault.... replaced with the Webstar though and I was proved right.... hooked the SB up again, tested my "crash the modem" theory (do a download, basically) and there you go, SB taken to the part bin in the sky.

Only wish blueyonder was available in my good lady's area, which is only 2 miles down the road.... as usual though, the edge of Newcastle is a little 'too' rural and TW didn't go that far out. Will be stuck with DSL if I can find anyone decent again now that F2S have been bought out....

You think thats bad? Forget gaming or anything latency sensitive at peak time, useless POS, Be LLU will be hear april/may so can give them a middle finger then. ADSL at my exchange is no better.
