    What to do now?

    My broadband has died on me and according to Tiscali's helpline, the pre-recorded message says something to the likes of:
    "We are aware that many of our customers in the Manchester area are having difficulties connecting to the internet. Our engineers are trying to fix this."

    The problem is that the connection to the service works (next to the clock it says connected to tiscali with speed of 2.3Mbps) but whenever I use any internet based program such as:
    * Internet Explorer
    * Winamp ShoutCast Radio
    * MSN
    * Mozilla etc

    it comes up with an error of
    "page not found ........ DNS error"
    or "socket ____ failed"
    or in MSN troubleshooting "DNS error and Keyports error."

    Any help would be appreciated as I need the connection back ASAP.

    P.S. the telephone helpline has a VERY LONG WAIT.
    P.S.S my friend's connection who lives 5 minutes away works and I think we are on the same BT server/switchboard.

    Switch to a better ISP, ZEN for example or one of the many other (somewhat cheaper) ISPs - remembering you get what you pay for in terms of reliability and customer service...

    However much I want to switch, I can't.
    I've only had the contract for 2 months now and it's a 12 month minimum contract......

    If it is a problem there end, which is seems like as they are acknowledging it, all you can do is wait. Find out on some forums more related to connectivity such as http://forums.speedguide.net/index.php? if other users of tiscali in the same area are actually having problems, for a good indication of if its your settings at fault.

    If tiscali are having problems with there dns servers it shouldnt exactly take them long to fix it.
    Nothing on this site that's recent. Only from January ifsearching for anything related to Tiscali.

    The are tiscali dns servers i think, and they are working as far as I know as I pinged them fine.

    Click ok, then redial connection.
    This didn't work: even though my settings were set up as 'automatic' and my friend's down 2 roads with the DNS settings you mentioned.

    In the end I rang the 'technical' helpline and after 3 hours of calling and 30-40 minutes on hold, and plenty of cut off saying "please try again later" it was fixed.

    All I had to do was go to regedit, delete the winsock, winsock2 keys from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>XXXXXX then disable all startup programs (including AVG) and restarting.

    Apparently even though this is a generic problem they presume that their customers are dumb and may break their windows OS so this information is NOT available on the tiscali website.......

    P.S. when ADSL2 comes in, I will only get 8MB if that I was just told...
