    Buying my first router

I'm considering buying this router from Scan

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=170238

as it seems to do everything I want it to, particularly a print server function. I'm going to buy this today, so there's a limited time to point me in the direction of a better choice, if there is one. For information, I'm networking the following:

    1. An NTL cable modem (Terayon Terajet 210)
    2. A standard desktop (Asus A7N8X-E deluxe motherboard)
    3. A Samsung X20 laptop (Centrino, Intel 915G)
    4. A Brother DCP 110C USB printer

I'm assuming that I'll be connecting the desktop to the router with the ethernet cable I'm using at the moment (so I'll need to buy another ethernet cable). I'll also need to buy a six-way power strip (I have a lot of crap in my room).

PS. the insert URL applet doesn't seem to work properly with Firefox.

Think the Scan website is down. Provided it isn't an ADSL modem router (as you appear to be on cable) you will find it probably does what it says on the box. If that meets your requirements, then go for it!

I always liked SMC barricade routers, they come with a hardware version of Zonealarm. Can't give you any specific model info thought because my info is a bit outdated

Well it arrived a few days ago, I've been waiting until I've got a while to sit down with it and get it working. It also came with a free gift - a TDK Blue5 bluetooth adapter for a Palm V. Funny thing was, it came in an almighty roll of bubble wrap that dwarfed the card

I must congratulate Scan on their efficient delivery and excellent customer service. Emails at each stage of picking were nice, and (of course) the free shipping for Hexites is very well received.

Hopefully the next update will wing it's way (partly) through the ether!

I've got the wireless internet going, but I'm having problems with the print server. The wizard seems to detect the printer on the network and asks me to add the IP adress of the router as a port. However, at the next step the printer isn't detected, the router just tries to install a generic network adapter.

Can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong?

[edit] I've established a port for the printer with the address of the router; this is shown in the properties tab of the printer I'm trying to use (Brother DCP-110C multifunction). The printer shows up as online on the WL500G status page, but as offline in Windows. I've disabled the Windows firewall (using the WL500G firewall) in case it was blocking anything, but still no joy.

[edit 2] It all works! I found out I had to enable LPR printing in properties, and select "use printer online" from the right-click menu. I'm typing in the living room now

Thanks for that tip! Got the same router the other day and the next step is to set up a printer. You've probably saved me some considerable time and effort.
I've tried to understand the documentation that came with the router and I am still not sure exactly how to set the firewall. What should I do to set up a secure firewall? Are there any ways/websites where you can test out the robustness of your PCs security?
I don't suppose anyone has any experience networking with a combo of wired and wirelss connected PCs going to this router? When I had 2 PCs connected by wire into the router they could see each other, but then I think I may have broke the CAT5 cable in the wall. Now I have 1 PC wired into the router and 2 PCs wirelessed into the router. The 2 wireless can see each other, but there is no link between the wired and any of the wireless. What do I have to do to get all 3 seeing each other? BTW internet connection works fine on all PCs. I'll worry about fixing the CAT5 cable another day!
Just a quick recommendation for anyone with a home network using ICS feeding off a Host PC with no hardware router - get a router! My router has freed up resources on what was the host PC and it is running so much faster now! I just feel a bit uneasy about not knowing what protection is going on inside the router.
    Cheers

    Ruggerbugger,
LPR has worked for me as well.
did you work out to use LPR by dabbling?
I tried following instructions on the wl500g.info website and it shows to use RAW. Windows says to look in your printer manufacturers manual to find out about using RAW and LPR, but there is nothing I can find in the manual or on HP's website. And I would like to understand what it all means. I've also got printer envy now because from looking at the HP website I can see that the printer model up from mine has a useful feature to make the paper out try go space saving vertical
    Cheers
