Reducing Ping

Currently i am pinging 30ms to servers, i am just wondering is there a way to get this reduced to 20ms?

ping depends on sooo much, but the short answer is no

if in counterstrike source then there are a few console tricks you can do.

Yeah i could use them if you post. Im on 1mb line and i always ping at about 40-60 even if im the only on online.

changing cl_cmdrate to a low number will affect your ping. there are also all kind of things you will have to play about with for lower pings, but tbh it is better to edit your rates for better bullelt reg than a lower ping score.

Like davos said theres loads that it depends on -eg,
The location of the server your playing on,
The speed of your connection,
Contentsion on your line could be a issue,
The amount of Computers sharring your connection,
and more ....

Would be interested to hear these tricks that can reduce your ping.

I'm not entirley sure what's allowed or not, but I was talking to someone on IRC a while back who said that some of these console tricks could be classed as cheating if they improve performance too much.

Like I said, I don't know what's allowed and what isn't, just be careful - don't want anyone not able to play anymore .

If it's just to improve a 30ms ping on CS, I wouldn't bother tbh. If it's anywhere near 100, then maybe...

Whilst we're on the subject, anyone know how to fix a "no steam logon problem"?

yup, everything i said above is called rate hacking

also having cl_cmdrate 100 on a 33 tick server will make u pretty much un hittable*, but i didnt say that


*you also wont be able to hit a thing yourself

but forget tweaking your hardware.

PRACTICE People who are better than you are, ARE sometimes cheating.

But sometimes they're simply better.

I don't play CS, but I used to play Q2 and Q3, and speed was of the essence. On a modem on Q2 i'd cap the frame rate to 25 or 30, s it effected the ping.

However,,,,,when you're cack, you're still cack! And I still died. A lot!

interesting - what do you have to put in for a 100tick server?

rate <really high number>
cl_cmdrate 101
cl_updaterate 101

and practice, cos people know what rates you are using, and i had do sort out a dude in SX whos rates were so high, nobody could hit him
