Another "help me with my network" thread

I've come to a point whereby I want to use my network for something a bit more than just sharing my ADSL. I'd like to be able to view / transfer files between machines.

    Setup is as follows :

Netgear DG834G ADSL modem / router / wireless access point

Machine 1 (desktop) ~ Linked by WiFi
    Machine 2 (desktop) ~ Linked by RJ45
Machine 3 (desktop) ~ Linked by WiFi
Machine 4 (PDA) ~ Linked by WiFi
Machine 5 (Laptop) ~ Linked by WiFi

All bar the PDA are running Win XP Pro. I'm not actually fussed about accessing the PDA, I just thought I should mention everything I have hooked up to the router...

So, situation is thus : I've run the network wizard on all machines, set them all to be the same workgroup etc... But none of them can "see" one another (in workgroup computers) let alone transfer files etc.

    So, uhh, any ideas? :s

Yes ~ But they can't even see each other in "workgroup computers", so that's fairly academic :/

Can you ping the computers by IP address?

If you can ping it by IP can you then ping it by name?

If you cannot ping by IP are all the PCs in the same numerical network (i.e 192.168.1.x or something similar to that)

It might be worth running "ipconfig /all" in a command window and pasting the results here so we can see wht the setup is like. Suggest you do it for 2 different PC (one wired and one WiFi

In the properties of the NICs, check that you have the following installed and enabled:
Client for Microsoft Networks (allows this machine to see other Windows clients on the network)
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks (allows this machine to share its resources and be accessible via the network)

In the advanced properties of "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)", on the WINS tab make sure NetBIOS over TCP/IP is not disabled.

Check these services are started on all machines:
"Computer Browser" (as you don't have a server or a dedicated master browser)
    "Server" (required to share resources)
    "Workstation" (required to access resources)

In Explorer / Tools menu, go to the View tab, scroll to the bottom and ensure that "Use simple file sharing" is NOT ticked.

Checked all of the above Mr. Adams, and all protocols are installed as they should be, and all services running.

Situation has changed, though. For no reason I can identify its just decided to work. Sort of, anyway.

I'm currently working with machine 2 and the laptop (for ease, both in the same room)

both can see each other, and machine 2 can access files on the laptop. Not vice versa, though - I get the following message

I've always struggled with sharing in xp sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. I've also only ever been able to access another computer if i'm logged in to the local pc with a username that matches one on the remote pc, i've never been able to get a window asking me with what username i want to log in with to the other pc like in w2k. Its most annoying

All machines have just one login (aside from administrator in safe mode), and all logins are identical :/

ah , its not like windows 98 , where as long as the usernames where the same

each log ins mapped to a very long number known as a SID (Security IDentifier )

so comp1\bob is not the same as comp2\bob.

either create accounts or enable the guest account.

you might also want to disable simple file sharing.

"Simple file sharing" is the option which lets users drop files into their personal shared files folder in their profile, but all other manually-created shares on the system would be accessed through the Guest account which is disabled.

Bear in mind that in a workgroup environment one machine cannot use the user accounts of another machine, it can only enumerate users in its local database.

At what point do you get the authentication error message?
As soon as you attempt to browse the machine, or when you attempt to access one of the shared resources?

If it is the former, check the local security policy on each machine:
Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Local Security Policy
Browse to Security Settings / Local Policies / Security Options
Check the options in the right-hand pane which begin with "Network access", in particular "Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares" (disable this)

If it is the latter, check the permissions on the shared resource include the user account you are trying to use.

I get the authentication message when as soon as I attempt to access the machine, by double clicking on its name from workgroup computers.

I just checked out security options, and disabled the one you mentioned... No change :/

Okay, so of machines 1,2,3 & 5 which ones have a problem accessing other machines?

In the local security policy, check "Local Policies / User Rights Assignment" - check "Access this computer from the network" has the user or a group the user belongs to in it.

Also check that "Deny access to this computer from the network" does not mention this user or a group he belongs to.

Checked the above user rights, all are as they should be.

Currently working with just machines 2 & 5. Both can see one another in workgroup computers.

2 can access 5 without troubles. 5 cannot access 2, I get no folders (apart from local ones) appear in network places, and trying to access the computer from workgroup computers returns the above error message.
