You really don't want to have no Firewall.

About as smart as unprotected sex with multiple strangers and you will be just as ......? - ill afterwards.

The statistics claim it takes 20 minutes for an protected PC on the internet to get infected - believe it or not it won't be long...

I suggest every pc should be running uptodate anti-virus software and an uptodate personal firewall as well as being connected via a Hardware firewall.

for AV software I believe they are all competent, some are quicker, use less memory and vary in price.

A personal firewall provides some incoming protection, but more importantly shows up any software that has installed itself and wants to send unauthorised messages - this can and will happen. 2 choices Windows and Zonealarm www.zonelabs.com both come free - personally I prefer Zonealarm and went for their bundled AV solution - you effectively have to pay for the virus bit.

the Hardware firewall ensures the majority of attackers do not get near you (unless you access their site first - see personal firewall above) It is fascinating??? looking at the firewall log - I reckon I can see someone probing my network every couple of hours.

to work out how safe you are - or not I find Steve Gibson www.grc.com one of the most readable (and entertaining) writers - he has a large number of utilities that will allow you to test how well protected you are - highly recomended.

If you decide you present setup needs to be replaced there are many suitable routers - Ebay is quite reasonably priced - got a high end one for £15, but you get no advice. so Scan and others are not much more, and provide sone guidance..

I have found the Dlink range robust and cost effective, but it is clear other makes have their fans too.

If you describe the problems in more detail maybe more focussed suggestions can be provided.

dont take Gibsons word as gospel.

Using a router with NAT is the least you should be running to keep your machine safe. It sounds like you are just not having much luck port foorwarding.

post up some screenshots of your config here and we'll see what can be done.

thats funny I've had more DOA and badly functioning Dlink routers than any other brand

have you tried enabling uPnP ?

that way Azareus will map the ports it needs. You also need to set azareus up correctly.

I would imagine your router is probably doing a reasonable job as a firewall. By default its probably set up to block unsolicited incoming traffic, and is completely open for outbound.

If your router is anything like mine (an old Netgear), you need to telnet to it to configure the firewall rules, and the system they use is a nightmare to understand.

Generally in this configuration, there shouldn't be much you have to do on you hardware firewall to get an internet-connecting application to work.

uPnP will need to be configred on both sides of the application.

have you taken a screenshot of the port forwarding yet ?

Empty your internet history and cache of cookies.

Hit Cntrl F5 when you open the page to make changes. Then once you've saved the changes, re open, Cntrl F5 again to check them.

Vigor control panel's don't always use the new information. SOmetimes they use your computers internet cache.
