ADVICE ON A NEW FIREWALL/ Router

Hi Ps forgive if these Qs seem to be obvious as i am new to this networking and am finding it very very difficult understanding Port fwrdng etc! Doh!!

Right i have just got a Dg834 Router/modem and have a AOL 2 mb line, the Router is set to default (changed password) and i have a SW firewall (kero Free) which is really good as it does not use the CPU as much as other FW's but it has limited functions, ie no web features. Now as i am going to do a clean install on windows soon i was want to change my Firewall can you recommend a good easy one that will work with emule Aol? Cheers in advance!

Ps as i am getting a lowid with emule and have tried port fwrdng w/out success do you think it may be easier for me to use the Torrent file sharing and dump the mule

The DG834 has UPNP support as does emule. As it has a stateful firewall build in IMHO there's not really much need for a software firewall as well. If you do decide to stick with a software one then Kerio is actually quite good.

Have a look at http://www.firewall.cx/ for some info on networking generally - some sections on firewalling and NAT in there.

    Good luck.

Software firewall is good for detecting unexpected outbound connections from malware you may have inadvertantly imported via a dodgy website/e mail.

    Try this
    http://www.portforward.com/english/r...G834/eMule.htm

seems a bit complicated but in essence

1.Find your PCs IP address (eg 192.168.1.2)
2.Find out which ports emule is using (eg TCP 4662)
3.Program the router to open the emule ports for your PCs IP address (4662 TCP for 192.168.1.2) repeat for each port you need to open.

May as well disable kerio to see if it works. If it does work re-enable kerio and see if it still works.
