Hmm, has he set up the default gateway in the TCP/IP(within connection>properties)? He'll need to set that to 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 most likely, depending on what your routers IP address is. Other then that, I'd try logging into the routers web interface and see if its got a DHCP list, or anything like that, so that you can see if his computers been recognised by the PC

It may be the router being designed to be like that though, I know BT build limitations into their hardware alot of the time in order to make people buy better stuff of them just to share a connection.

it only has one pc listed in the dhcp list.

in the tcp/ip setting it is set on "automatically assign ip". and when i try to renew the ip it says that the operation timed out.

Have you tried setting a static IP and did you do as I said regarding the default gateway?

Have you set up a DHCP scope (address range) in the router?

Connect via the wired connection for setting up, then look for the DHCP settings.

'Good Belkin' - is that an oxymoron?

Not sure what the 2091 is based on ... a lot of these OEM equipment uses the Globespan Virata board - a very capable router, however you need explore all the set up pages to see how to set up the DHCP server.
