Strange networking problem

I have a Draytek Vigor 2800 VG which is great

Hardwired to that I have 2 home pcs
I also have set up wirelessly an Xbox (swithed off mainly) and a home laptop also wireless.

All work fine

I just started a new job and got a new work laptop I've bought a Phillips SNN6500 Wireless Card for it and have configured it up for use with my Wireless

I've allowed its Mac code and given the correct Wep Key and I have connected to my router, the signal is rated "excellent" the ip has been auto assigned and looks good there is just 1 problem.

I cannot get online with it? I cannot surf or ping out anything from my laptop.
I have the latest drivers installed for my card and on the router, the other laptop set up exactly the same way will send and recieve no problem and surf all day.

I just don't know what else to do, I've tried the firewalls even disabling them but still I can't get any access to the net from it.

Any ideas I'm tearing my hair out

You have a DHCP assigned address from the Vigor, right? If it were just browsing that you were having an issue with I would suggest checking that your browser isn't trying to run through a proxy, but this seems strange...

Can you ping the router from your laptop?
If you can not, then try allocate static address and ping it again.

Hi No I cant ping a sausage

I also tried it manually and it still didn't work

in my connection settings nothing is checked or marked its exactly the same as my other laptop but it just won't work?

its tries to search for the webpage then just stop and I get the cant connect page?

Can you do "ipconfig /all" and post it here? (delete MAC addresses, etc for obvious reason).

yeah, could use some more info really. also if you could drop a tracert www.bbc.co.uk or similar and let us know what error it comes back with

Do you have any joy if you temporarily disable MAC filtering and WEP?

Hmmm - clearly a connection is made to the router in order that your NIC be assigned an ip address, so it makes no sense that you can't ping 192.168.1.1 - most routers are configured to not respond to pings from the WAN but should respond fine from the LAN. I assume everything works fine when wired?

Yep it times me out if If I ping my router

Havent tried it wired yet, bit of a problem in that I have a local setting for home and a setting for work in the officer

work is wired in the office so Im dont want to knacker those settings up

If you have an alternate setup with a static IP address (which is what it sounds like in your description) it will wait for the DHCP client to fail before failing over to the static address.

Out of interest what ip address are you given if you do iptnfig /release then ipconfig /renew ?

no I have a dynamic ip address but my gateway is constant I think.

All other pcs are configured automatically and I have my ips bound to my mac addresses so they are constant and wont change

Not sure what you mean by that... The router should be your gateway.


After reading it a third time I take it that you have setup DHCP reservations for each MAC? Can you remover those temporarily and try renewing the laptop ip address again? Once you do that can you see in the router management if your laptop is connected to it at all (perhaps active DHCP leases or similar)

Sounds like you should be looking for firewall rules causing this

Why delete the MAC address?
Posting your external IP address isn't always a good idea, but you cant work out anything bar the Manufacturer of the interface from a MAC address and it cant be used to attack your PC.
