IP Range

Just out of interest, which IP range do you use on your networks? I currently use a custom one at home cos I was mucking about with DHCP AGES ago, but never bothered to change it, but am going to be replacing it with either 192.168.0.x or 192.168.1.x .

In our work we use a class B range.

On one network I let the broadband router assign addresses via DHCP from a "192.168" class C subnet.
I used to change this from the default but whenever a factory reset or firmware upgrade is done it would always revert so I gave that up.

On my private LAN I have a Windows DHCP server configured to dish out addresses from a "10" class C network to keep them distinct.

I tend to use "172" networks for virtual machines.

I use 10.0.0.x. It's easier to type when you're browsing to machines and devices

At home i'm on a subnet of a Class C network for VPN use, and span onto a Class B network via another VPN then I have my Class C Wireless network as well.

Currently working on a network range for work using a Class B network with several subnets, and then breaking one of the subnets into lots of tiny Class C subnets.

I manually set mine ( stuff this DCHP malarkey - statics fun )

I use 192.168.1.1 :: router

PC's then take 192.168.1.2 upto 192.168.1.12 depending on how many clients are wired and wirelessly connected to the network.

Soon I'll be getting a range from my ISP (yay!) so no doubt all these will change shortly

Can't be 192.168.1.2 because my voyager 205 assigns that to the USB connection by default

192.168.1.* for the main subnet, 192.168.2.* for anything else (wireless bridge for example).

First router I had was 192.168.1.* so since then i've always changed any new ones to also work the same so I dont have to change addresses.

I just changed mine to the 192.168.1.x as I stuck in a new router. Used the router to assign DHCP so even if our server is off peeps can still access the Internet.

My Router assigns dynamically from 192.168.1.1 but I have three units on my network which are manually set with an IP address.

Would the router ignore these manually applied IP addresses or do I need to tell the router to omit those IP addresses when dynamically assigning new ones?

Advice would be appreciated.

If the DHCP pool includes those addresses, the DHCP server will think it can assign them to clients if it does not have a record of them.

In "full blown" DHCP servers you can configure exceptions inside a DHCP pool for manually assigned addresses, what is probably easiest with a home router is to get the MAC address of each client and assign them a static DHCP allocation, this reserves that IP address for the given MAC address and stops it being assigned elsewhere.

Then you can optionally set the clients to obtain their address via DHCP, and they should always get the same address anyway.
