    Question Sharing the internet... Options?

My brother & his friends are getting the internet, the problem is, the flat they are in, actually spans over 3 floors.

The phone line is in the kitchen, so this is where the router would be, then the other two people are on the next two floors.

    Is wireless an option?

Would they need to spend a lot of money on a wireless router?

Or will it have to be a wiring job, only issue there is the landlord...

    Thanks

Wireless might work but over 3 floors there might be an issue unless they were willing to splash the cash and purchase boosters if the need arose.

The landlord might come round to getting the house wired with Cat5e, ours did as it added another feature for future residents.

If you do go down the wireless route it would probably be best to get a phone socket (for the ADSL) wired in to the middle of the three floors. That way the wireless only ever has to penetrate one floor, which is hopefully will manage, rather than two stories, which it probably wont.

The landlord shouldn't object to that.

Or, another idea, you could try something like a HomePlug device, which lets you network by your house's mains wiring (depends if they are entirely separate floors). All you would need to do is then have a router in the kitchen which is then connected to a Powerline/Ethernet bridge. There are currently two speeds IIRC, 14Mbps and 85Mbs, which are just starting to appear.

Solwise do an 85Mbps device, check it out at: http://www.solwise.co.uk/net-powerline-pl-85pe.htm
    And a review: http://www.adslguide.org.uk/hardware...olwiseplug.asp
(no I'm not plugging them )

    More info on HomePlug: http://www.homeplug.org/en/products/index.asp

    Hey.

I live in a 3 floor uni house and we have the wireless router (netgear DG834G) on the lowest floor. I get "excellent" signal being on the very top floor (got a PCI wiresless D-link card) however the girl in the room next to me has got a cheapo ebuyer PCMCIA card and gets "low" signal. So i would say spend money on good cards and you will see the benefits. And dont get the netgear router i have, it normals drops the wireless connection for no reason, and just generally poor.

    Hope that helps.
    Will.
