    Wireless Ad Hoc Set-Up Help

    Please help me...

Me and my friend both have wireless network cards; he has a Netgear 108mb/s and i have a Foxconn 54mb/s. He is running Windows XP whereas i am running Windows 2000 Pro.

I just cannot get them to communicate, or to set-up so that we can see each others shared files, i.e. music and videos.

I have abandoned trying with the Windows network set-up tool, as it just doesn't like to work, and XP always wants to create a file to put onto a flash drive, but i dont know how to use it.

Using the cards programs, (Netgear and Foxconn) i have set all the settings identically; so that there is 64bit WEP encryption (same password), ad hoc settings.

    I have the settings as:
    SSID: PEERLINKUP
    Operating Mode: Ad Hoc
    Channel: 1
    Tx Rate: Auto

What else can i do. It says on each of the respective programs that there is a connection, but i cannot exchange files or anything.

I am a complete newbie to wireless networking, but thought it would be much simpler than it is turning out to be.

I shall soon be getting a mac mini and will want that set up wirelessly so i can share files!

Any help would be greatfully appreciated.

    Cheers

    Ian

Just to make it a bit more clear.

I am hoping to set up the two computers to share files wirelessly. Can we do this with just a wireless connection or do we need to set up a small wireless network?

What do i need to do this and how do i go about setting one up, bearing in mind we are using two different operating systems.

Is there an easy way to go about this without using a router/access point or do you know of a website with easy to follow instructions for someone like me to follow?

I have messed around with settings and tried so much stuff but i just cannot get either pc to see the other one to share files etc.

    Thanks

    Ian

PS. This is just one of those things that is buggine me, and i want to get sorted asap...
any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Have you set up a LAN connection for the wireless cards in settings, network and dial up settings, using thev make new connection tool (and the equivalent in XP)? You will need to assign a manual IP address for each computer in the same subnet range and allow file sharing on each machine.

Get it working without encryption first, then use as high as your cards will support - at least 128 bit, prefereably 256.

I haven't really played with the ad hoc mode much, so can't give you any definitive guide, but that might point ypu in the right direction.

    Cheers for that Peter.

When i click for 'make new connection' in windows 2000 i get the following options:

Which one do i choose? Also as for ip addresses what do i choose? as my pc has already been allocated an ip address because of the university network, would i be able to just use that, as they are all in the same range, 129...

    Cheers

I use ad-hoc with my Squeezebox. You will be limited to 'b' speeds (11mb), even if you have 'g' cards. Also, you can only use basic WEP security i believe.

But it should not be to difficult, as long as you follow a few steps such as manual static IP settings. I did have links to a couple of good guides, but cant find them. I will have another look later.

Sorry - my mistake - its been a while since I have done this...

Assuming the card has installed OK and the drivers are in place, log in as administrator, and in network and dial up connections there should be a Lan icon fort he card. There may also be one for a wired NIC too. You can rename them to make identification easier.

Right click the icon and go to properties where you can set up the IP address etc. This IP address can be different from the one on the NIC...

When that is done on both computers, you should get the connection... (not something I have done - I prefer a bit of cat 5 connecting the twowo NICs - much faster!)

i have changed the ip addresses as you suggested for the wireless connection,

but still nothing is coming up.

do i need to create another wireless network, as i have tried to create an adhoc connection but still nothing is showing!

do i need to input any values for the DNS? or default gateway?

and when everything is working where should i be able to see his pc/folders etc? under my network places? as atm i cannot see anything.

again any help is greatly appreciated.

    ian

when i click on 'computers near me' it shows his laptop, but i get the following

Also worth checking is that they're in the same workgroup - 2k by default (iirc) uses WORKGROUP whereas XP uses MSHOME

ive changed the workgroup to 'MONSTER'

the machines are pratically right next door to each other, my mate is in the room nextdoor.

ill try again and disable all securities to see if that allows us to see each other.

    thanks once again

    ian

PS do we have to create a network, or should me just changing the ip addresses allow us to see each other using each others wireless cards?

    hello people

i think it is now up and running thanks to all your help.

however one minute problem now, is that when we first connected to my pc from my mates laptop, it asked him for a password to access the shared files.

i now want to make this more secure, so i created a user name on my pc for him

so how can i change the original details i entered into the pc (the username and password) it asked for to log onto my pc, to get access to my files, to another profile that i have just created?

    i cant find it anywhere...

    any hints / tips?

    cheers

Windows 2000 machine? Right click the share, properties and you should find your security tab there. Bear in mind that in this situation he must enter his credentials as YOURMACHINEHOSTNAME\username and then password - if he just enters the username you gave him then his machine will interpret that as HISMACHINEHOSTNAME\username, and those will be the credentials his machine sends
