    Subdomains?

    I have the domain www.caged.net (not going anywhere atm, just tries to access my router, which won't let you in ).

    Is it possible to host subdomains straight off this? At the moment my domain is set up with 123reg to have the DNS for my domain pointing at my IP.

    Can this be done, or would it involve running a name server as well?

    Thanks

    If you can add subdomains to your dns at 123reg and your webserver supports name based virtual hosts then yes.

    Didn't know about that as i've never used them before, you'll probably have to get some alternate dns hosting then.

    Personal Choice (as i'm using them, simple to use) : http://www.dnsexit.com/

    They do free dns hosting for any domain.

    Info here.

    Hmm, I'm trying to set it up so that entering www.caged.net just takes people to port 80, whereas stuff.caged.net takes them to a different port, like 400 for example. Both on the same box on the same IP. I take it that this isn't possible then?

    To start can i say

    I don't see why you're trying to do this

    HTTP runs on port 80, the main domain has to point to the main web folder and sub-domains are folders within your "root" (www/public_html)

    I am guessing that you are using apache? some info here on it

    If I remember rightly, 123-reg do support sub-domains - but it is a chargeable extra.

    PS. Just been and looked, and they do £10/year per subdomain, or you can get bulk rates.

    Personally, that strikes me as rather expensive.

    123-reg support sub-domains for there hosting package they do not if you want to move your domain away from them to your own server ect

    For Caged to do what he wants will make the 123-reg control panel unusable as soon as the DNS is moved to his server

    True.

    okie,

    if you have all the subdomains going to the same ip then wildcard the dns, so that a.caged.net b.caged.net all point to one place then from this, if the box is accepting all the request to setup a.caged.net to go to port 80 on the web server and b.caged.net to go to port 600 this needs to be setup on the httpd server side so if u use apache you will need to setup virtual sites with particular ports for each,

    Thats what I have done while running apache, 6 sub domains just requires a little bit of text in the conf file, problem is he is not hosting it himself, he is paying the domain company to host it, do he doesn't have direct access or control over the server.

    £10 per sub-domain is insane, this is how much work you have to do to Apache to set up a sub-domain (re-direct is easier, but this actually acts like a different site and works A LOT better than sub domaining, but it wont work if the site the sub domain will be is not on the servers network).

    Code:
    <VirtualHost *>
    ServerName cotom.atomnet.co.uk
    DocumentRoot "/usr/http/cotom"
    DirectoryIndex index.php index.htm index.html
    </VirtualHost>
    Expensive paragraph, eh?

    What I meant was at the moment, I am not paying for hosting, the DNS for caged.net resolves to my IP, as I changed the entry for DNS in my 123reg control panel to my static ADSL IP.

    Does this help?

    Thanks

    Yep. That means all you have to do is (if you are using apache) is change the paragraph that I posted to suit the sub domains you want. Are the sub domains going to be hosted on the same machine, or are they re-directs?

    Any ideas how to do this if I am using IIS?

    Or does that involve beating me and telling me to use Apache . Can Apache be installed nicely as a service that doesn't need to run in a command prompt window on my desktop?

    Thanks

    IIS will only support subdomains if its the server version included on Win2k Server or Win2k3 Server, so unless its one these versions you'll have to use apache.
