without splashing out onsomething like a Draytek router the only way I can think of for you to do this is to run one machine as a proxy with some form of shaping software on it - do you have a spare old machine kicking around? If so I believe ClarkConnect will do what you need.
its looking like that isnt it
i do actually have an old banged up machine, but i wasnt wanting to actually use it. also, setting up a proxy like mentioned would mean gaining access to the other pc's to configure them, which is a no go![]()
A proxy isnt required, smoothwall or its ilk will do it all without the need for proxy serving.
hmm smoothwall has come on a bit since 0.9... might have a play sometime! i presume i could just plug my Netgear WGT634U wireless cable modem into it and have it working just as it is now.
shaping is something that obviously needs hardware integration![]()
You could be crude and install NetLimiter on all the PC's (except yours) and set them to limit incoming traffic at whatever the speed of 4Mb is devided by 4?
But again, you'd need access to the other comps....
Diablo (Main PC): Corsair Air 540; Gigabyte Z77-D3H; i5 3570k @ 4.4Ghz; 16Gb Corsair Vengeance PC3-12000; 120Gb Samsung 840 EVO; EVGA 980 Ti Hybrid; 2x Dell U2414H; Windows 10 x64.
Imperius (VM Server): 2x Intel 5640, 64Gb RAM, 2x1Tb, 6x Intel NIC, VMware ESX 5.5
Tyrael (File Server): Synology DS410 w/ 4x HD154UI; 2Gb RAM; DSM 5.2
pretty much, though if you're looking to shape bandwidth for wireless you may have issues...
The setup I have which could run shaping if needed is Netgear modem/router>clarkconnect (more info at http://www.clarkconnect.com/forums/s...559&Main=80852 on using it for traffic shaping) >switch>client pcs
This has the advantage of zero config being required for client pcs - they just see it as a normal ethernet connection, but they recieve shaped bandwidth.
EDIT - also unless I'm mistaken Smoothwall doesn't support traffic shaping unless you buy the corporate/enterprise versions.

Splash's example is probably the only one available on a budget (although I think you might be able to use m0n0wall to do it as well)
actually it sounds like you are not after not full "shaping" of the traffic , just limiting it. Shaping is a little bit more complex and involve modify the ammount of data certain protocol use so that there is always BW available for other types is a slightly more QoS role )

and to make you aware on the Drayteks Port Throttling (I got one cos I wanted to throttle ports for fair online internet speeds)
It literally throttles the port. Not just for internet. For everything.,
So file transfers between PCs take an AGE unless you switch it on and off as desired.
Just thought you might like to know![]()

IPCop can do traffic shaping, although you may need to use an addon or learn a little bit of linux (but hey it's free) for what you wish to do as in its default configuration it only shapes TCP/IP / UDP ports and not IP addresses/clients.
