Putting my printer on my network

officially (make of that what you will), you need an HP Jetdirect - 175X, 310X or 380X

Or just get an AirPort Express?

    Supports USB printing.

The only non-headache inducing way to do this is to use a JetDirect. Every other method I've used to create a standalone network printer have failed miserably.

Either that or the WGPS606 from netgear - gives you a 4 port switch aswell - acting as a bridge to your wireless network and has support for 2 usb printers. Thats what I've done anyway.

    Dave

oh and it is a wireless range extender - improves the quality of the wireless signal, almost as a repeater would.

We've tried usb&parrel 'print servers' but they've never been happy with the DHCP setup at work.

    JetDirect certainly the nicest option.

Just wondered what you meant by issues with the DHCP setup at work? If you make a DHCP reservation for the print server MAC address all should be fine.

That said I always like to work with the Jetdirects. They just work

Assuming the print server isn't crap (you know how many we go through here and how often they need resetting).

Fantastic cards, well worth the extra cash

True, but provided the ip is reserved against the MAC in DHCP there shouldn't be any DHCP issues.

Pants print servers that crash when you look at them, however...

It was random wether it would even contact the DHCP server. We use hostname addressing not IP so having it fixed wouldnt have helped anyway.

This was only for twp A3 Injkets and they are now hooked upto a dedicated machine so no more troubles.

How bizarre! Only time I've ever seen that happening was when I was being stupid and set the printserver to have an ip address outside of the subnet's scope. For which I smacked myself in the forehead furiously, natch.

    I agree. I love jetdirect.
In fact where I work is like most IT people's wet dreams.
All PC's are HP Compaq, All printers are HP, all non builtin printservers are jetdirect, all of the network infrastructure is Cisco (and the phones) All of the Servers are HP/Compaq and we have more fibre than you can shake a stick at.
