    Pci Adsl

    Hi all,

I'm moving into a new home this Friday and as I cant get NTL , so I'll be on ADSL. I'm looking at a few ISPs, but my current decision is which PCI modem?

Call me silly, but I'm told and have read that a PCI card will offer lower latency, hence my decision also its just going to be the PC and a phone so I doubt a router is needed at all.

    Anyone have any suggestions/reviews?

£50 will be the limit and I'll probably be on a 2mb connection.

    Thanks

In theory a PCI modem will offer slightly lower latency, but in practice you probably wouldn't notice the difference over a router, most latency occurs in the link outside your network, so a couple of milliseconds here or there will be swamped by latency elsewhere on the route - over which you have no control. A router offers MUCH greater versatility. Don't go USB modem though, they load the CPU significantly.

yup, the best idea is to get a modem & router, linksys or netgear would be my recommendation, ad they are reliable, offer much greater flexibility and aren't significantly more expensive to buy. Your motherboard will have the required ethernet adapter, so why not use that? Its plug and play and always on - simplicity at its best.

Yep PC World have a great deal on a linksys combined wireless router and modem (obviously if speed is the issue you use the ethernet ports) and you get a free PCMIA adapter which you could either flog or use .

My other thought is that I dont want any clutter. thats why the PCI modem sounded good. direct connection and then thats it. A router and an external modem will add clutter and although add unctionality, its really not needed in this instance.

I've also heard PCI only takes 6% of a CPU where as USB can take up to 15% and a standard external ethernet router/modem takes 10%

I'll have a look around and browse PC World - thanks for the advice guys

you were lied to, an ethernet adsl modem/router has zero CPU overhead. pci & usb will have about the same
