the ntl should got a cable modem already (or even a router), you only need an ethernet cable to connect it to your PC.

You don't need anything else unless you want to share the connection with multiple computers / go wireless.

Erm, I'd imagine you'll be looking ofr a WLAN card. I'd recommend going PCI over USB if you plan on hammering the connection just for stability reasons - other than that there's loads on the market. Generally I'd advise buying a card that is made by the same manufacturer as the WAP.

As for "lots of speed for downloading" even the 11b standard will give you more bandwidth than your broadband connection will allow, just bear in mind that just about every ISP is starting to shape/limit their traffic, eps for peer to peer which is what I assume you mean.

EDIT - also if you wanna go wired you can do as Arthur suggests above - beat me by seconds

If you get a 54mbs card you will be fine as far as what you mean - BUT

3 floors is a long way for a signal to reach, so there is a good chance that you might not actually get a signal in your room...if this is the case then you wil need to buy signal boosters/wireless bridges and put them in the middle of the house.

You will not know if you need this or not until you try first though

    yer this is all true
wherre can i find one of these things?
also the thing is people that aRE staying ion the b&b will also be able to connect wirelessly
will they steal all my speed or bandwith?
if so is there anything that can stop this frrom happening??

In a word, no. The only way you'll get anywhere near a 100Mbps is going to be to run cabling - frankly I would be doubtful you will get anything without putting in place repeaters - putting cable in may actually be cheaper...

If people at the B&B are being allowed access to the wLAN then the simple fact of the matter is that without some form of shaping/filtering they could easily chew through the bandwidth... Is having a seperate dedicated line put in for your room an option?

As for what you need if you intend to pursue current plan - find out what make the WAP is and check Scan for a PCI 54g card made by the same manufacturer.

As for running ADSL as well as the cable broadband - I think what you're suggesting is that you have a BT line as well as the NTL cable - am I right? If so then you would be able to have ADSL run on the BT line as a complete seperate connection to the NTL wireless broadband, though bear in mind that this is an expense.

As for running cabling - if it's a guest house it may be worth calling round (unless you can do it yourself) and getting quotes for a professional to run the data cable from the router point through the walls and possibly finish it off with an data point in the basement - I believe David on here has recently run ethernet to certain rooms in his house, and I know a relative of mine has just put data points in every room of his house.

Another possibility (though you won't be getting 100Mbps speeds again) is to invest in a Devolo ethernet over power kit like http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/02...ighspeed_dlan/ - they're not cheap, but they may well be worth the money for convenience' sake

100 metres of cat5 patch cable costs £33 + VAT from RS - but then you have to add the cost of the plugs etc. Personally I would use trunk cable (£22 +VAT for 100 metres) and terminate it with RJ 45 sockets, then use patch cables to connect toto the router and PC at each end. the RJ 45 ssokets, pattress box, face plates etc would be about a tenner each. Probably cost more but a neater/more reliable installation.

You could use a router with traffic shaping facilities buit in (Draytek) to prevent bandwidth hogging. You could also get a BT product - I think its called hot spot in a box - you provide and pay for the ADSL line, but access is on the basis of prepaid vouchers that you sell to the B&b guests (at a profit) allowing them so much access. I don't know the details - have a look on Google.

Because it gets you around needing to mess around with wireless - it sends the data over your existing power cabling - you take a line (cat5) from NTL box, plug it into the adapter which goes into a power socket. Down in the basement you plug another adapter in, then cat5 to your PC. Claims of 85Mbps are made, but even if you get a quarter of that then your way above what NTL can give you out of your LAN.

I've used the adapters before - they are pretty good.

Whilst its good to see you are getting the help you need, can you please type full words as it makes it very hard to read, if someone is looking for help in future it makes it much more likely they will refer to your questions and answers when they can read it without having to really concentrate.

    Thanks

yes please - generally I ignore posts written text speak, or with no punctuation or just poorly written - if the writer can't be bothered to write clearly, I can't be bothered to help!
