Question HELP! Sharing My adsl between 2 pcs with NO router!CanLimit the speed on 2nd pc?

ok i have done this aaaaaaaaaaaaaageeeeeeeesssssssss ago with the ps2. but am rusty and just want the best method
right heres what i want to do:
i have 2 pcs and a piece of cat5(e i think) crossover cable and i want to connect my second pc (slave if you like) to it and to use my main pc's internet connection (which is always on btw so no problems there) i have sygate personal firewall pro 5.5 if this helps (as when using xbox networked i have to disable it as it wont let me connect to it... i am telling you guys this as it might pose as a problem if i can't get it working so any sygate fixes would be helpfull)
so once thats going ... is it possible to limit the bandwidth the other pc see's as i only have 1.1mb... and the 2nd pc wont be used for downloads... just pure surfing and viewing possible large pics so i figure either straight 50/50 split or 3quarters to main pc and 1 quarter to the slave? or is there no software or method of doing this? if not i should just set my download programs etc to use a desired max download speed and then there rest is free to my other connection? or will it still be slow as sometimes with bit torrent downloads if its say 20k and in theory the other 30k or so is free it still is slow?why is this?
cheers lol i know i haven't explained this too well but any info is much appriciated

Yep, was in the same boat wanted to limit bandwidth to second PC. There's a piece of software called NetLimiter (google for it) and you can set the limits for single programs or the entire PC that its installed on.

Why do you need to split it? That would mean on a 2M connection none of your computer will actually enjoy 2M, but 1M only. Kind of stupid to split like this.

You can use a program called SoftPerfect Bandwidth Manager to set maximum bandwidth available for your LAN computer to internet, but not restricting lan speed.

Try let the sygate allow ALL outgoing traffic. If you want the computer in the LAN to play online, you might need to open a couple of ports on the sygate, and use windows ICS to forward some ports to the LAN (under "services" IIRC)

As RavenNight said, Netlimiter will work too, but it will take a bit of system performance for doing so. Not desirable for a gaming machine.

I think the Idea with netLimiter is that you run it on the second PC, it only limits the PC its installed on, that way you Main rig is left squeaky clean for gaming.
