    webhosts...

who's pretty reliable and cheap? in the process of setting up a site to sell pictures through etc.
many places where you register domain names offer webhosting, is this often the best of would some alternative host be best?
I'm also looking to register both .com and .co.uk and then re-direct to where ever the hosting is - although I've no idea how to do this. In this instance might it be best to get hosting with one address (from the same place when its offered) and then redirect the second address?
just wondering what best options are...cheers

Theres a thread with lots of cheap hosting recommended by hex peeps.

    I personally would recommend http://www.dream-hosting.co.uk

They are dirt cheap and I know a few people who havent had problems and they have
been with them for over a year.

they also have domain names from http://www.ukreg.com

They are quite cheap and you can change name servers and redirect websites
    for free.

What you need to look out for with domain name people is if they charge for you to
move to a different company. I dont think ukreg do but some do so make sure you
    check.

    http://www.qiq.co.uk/technology1.php

£16.99 for a year, 10GB of space and 100GB monthly bandwidth. PHP 4 and 5, and as many email boxes and sql databases as you like.

Used by a bunch of people here!

anyone heard of these people? http://www.streamlinenet.co.uk/

they seem to be ok on the price but not sure about what sort of stuff servers can take, i don't know that much other than some galllery software is php/mysql (is that right?)...but it all seems to be there in the listing...

Give Peter Harris at qiq an e-mail. The unlimited option at streamline looks good, but their basic £18.99 account has 150MB compared to qiq's £16.99 and 10GB, so qiq can probably offer you something beyond competitive with the space that you need.

They do, but 123-reg is probably slightly cheaper. QiQ allows unlimited subdomains set up very simply through their control panel.

Being a total noob when it comes to setting up websites, I've found QiQ's support database to be excellent as well, even when it came to messing around setting up a content management system, their FAQ actually had my questions and the answers I needed, which may well have been the first time I've ever found a FAQ useful!

I swear they aren't paying me to say this!

so do you have to buy both the webspacey-bit and also register a domain at the same time? its not all inclusive is what I'm wondering.

it looks to cost about the same if you register domain elsewhere and get it transfered:
£8.48 for 2yrs as a domain against £3.04 (inc vat at 123reg.co.uk) + £5 to transfer that name... or is that not how it works?

oh and was going to register a ".com" with godaddy too...seems pretty cheap.

Nope. You can have the domain with one company and hosting with another and just direct the domain name to your hosting space, basically telling the world that www.domain.com is found on your hosting server.. The transfer fee is to move the domain name from one company to the other, if that makes sense, which you wouldn't need to do.

ah so I only have to pay the £3 for name and £16 for the hosting, and then tell the domain reg. it to go to the host ...? I presume when you get the webhost/space the info is included on how to do this?... I'm (as you've gathered) somewhat of a noob at this

Basically, you tell the company you bought the domain from "Oi! This is where I want my hosting!", using the name servers provided by the hosting company.

You then tell the hosting company "Oi! My domain is example.com!". It might take hours/a couple of days for the changes to take effect, but that's about it. (If memory serves)

oh right, that simplifies things - do you normally get an email associated with that domain?
e.g. if I choose "bigkahoonaburger.com" as a web address is it normal to get a "myself@bigkahoonaburger.com" type email address associated with it incl. forwarding on to usual address (pop3 etc)
