You can, but you need a crossover cable not a normal cable.

I assume you have a router, you can plug the laptop into that using the cable from the xbox.

i thought i could but its a pain in the .... to take it into the living room when pc is in the bedroom but i guess im going to have to for the larger transfers

will the pc switch from wireless to cable itself and then back again when i pull the cable after the transfer is done ?

As with a lot of computing, just give it a go and you'll understand more than asking random questions. Once you've got a crossover cable connecting the two...

Set the IP addresses on both of the computers (choose the correct network interface now ) to 192.168.0.x, with a Class C subnet of 255.255.255.0.

The x is a variable where you would set one as 1, and another as 2 for example. Once you've done this, simply file share with your current methods. I would probably disable the wireless interface whilst doing this to reduce complications.

Remember to change the IP addresses back to automatically assign, otherwise you may try to use the wired for something else and wonder why it's not working

depending on the NICs in the laptop and the desktop, you might not even need a crossover cable as many NICs now detect what kind on cable is plugged in and will reconfigure their pins as required. i can't remember what this feature is called, but it does have some obscure acronim as usual

correct but i stated i had tried a normal cable from my xbox , i know about crossover cables as thats how i used to network my mums pc and my laptop to my main pc which was on all the time

i was only wondering if i could connect via wire while using the wireless and whether it would seamlessly swap between the two as i plugged and unplugged the wire

would it not just bridge the two connections ?

no it won't seamlessly swap the connection. When i plug into my router as well as having wireless enables i end up with two IP addresses and two protocol stacks, one for each adapter. I think Server can bind connections together, but i don't think XP can.

So i take it you don't have a router to plug into?

If you're worried about maintaining an internet connection whilst doing said copying, it should be alright. You can only try...

I believe the crossover/patch auto-switching is called Auto MDI/X or something similar isn't it 0o

    XP Pro can
throw new ArgumentException (String, String, Exception)
