    Can't connect with 10/100mbps HUBs.

Okay, at the present moment the network I have is as follows: My Belkin Router connects my PC and my Media Centre PC to the rest of my network via an ethernet cable which is plugged into the uplink port of a 10mbps HUB in my house (I live in a garage whilst the rest of my family live inside *shrug* don't ask why). That 10mbps HUB is then connected to 2 other PC's and my XBOX 360 which I have recently aquired. Only problem is that the Media Centre function on the XBOX 360 requires a 100mbps HUB :/

I have 2 100mbps HUBS though you see, one is a 3Com and one is SohoConnect. However, when I plug the ethernet into either of those HUB's uplink ports the whole LAN crashes and I can't connect to either of the 2 PC's inside or the XBO 360! The lights on the HUB's for the uplink blink on and off as well. I can't for the life of me figure out why the 10mbps HUB works fine and yet these two HUB's don't! Only thing I can think of is incompatibility issue? The 10mbps HUB is a generic HUB built in 2000. Any help you guys can give will be much apprenciated! I've been told a crossover cable might work but I'd really prefer not having to go back to the whole clinching process if possible.

What happens if you plug the cable into one of the ports on the 100Mbps hubs (are they really hubs or are they switches) that ISN'T the uplink port? It's entirely possible that the LAN port on the router is expecting a through-wired connection, and is in fact getting a cross wired one or vice versa. The other thought that occurs is that either the LAN port on the router has been locked to 10Mbps half duplex to work with the hub, and that's screwing up the autodetection on the 10/100 hubs/switches, or that it's simply failing to negotiate speed and duplex settings with them. I suppose the LAN port on the router IS 10/100 capable?

I agree, it seems like an auto-sensing issue, i'd chuck out the 10mbps hub and try everything with 100Base-TX/Full-Duplex mode.

It's a Belkin F5D7630-4A and I don't think it shouldn't be 10/100 capable. I tried plugging the ethernet from the router into one of the standard ports on both 10/100's but I got the same result as when it was plugged into the uplink. And they are both HUB's, not switches. I don't think it's locked as the first device I tried using with this router is 3com 10/100mbps and that had the exact same problem as I'm having now, so I got this little 10mbps from a friend and it worked fine as it is at the moment. I'm going to try get a 10/100 switch from a friend and test that out on thursday.

According to its manual, the 4 lan ports on your router are all 10/100 switched, so there should be nothing stopping them from working with a 10/100 hub. I'd seriously try a crossover cable; I think you're most likely running into problems because the devices don't autosense through or cross wiring.

Is there not an issue with having traffic traversing three hubs / switches? You might be getting collisions bringing the whole thing down.

I'm not sure where I heard this of why it happens though, or even if it's correct.

There's a limit on the number of switches you can traverse; 7 I believe. That said, he's not doing that; he's got EITHER the 10Mbps hub OR one of the two 10/100s plugged in. The first works, the second doesn't.

Just to let you know Kev - had exactly the same problem on my router which was meant to be auto sensing 10/100 and a 100Mb Hub - which was also meant to be sensing. (solwise SAR705 and NetGear FE104 for those interested).

I /could/ get it to work by setting the router to 10Mb manually - but it would go back every time the router was rebooted - which meant disconnecting it from the switch, and straight to a PC - altering it and then putting it all back - a PITA basically.

Sorted with a 10/100 switch (linksys) - then it ran quite happily.
Now go away before I taunt you a second time.

I think you need to draw a picture

Either way, put the best hubs/switches at the core of your network.

Awesome, Well my friend whose meant to be lending me the linksys switch has forgotten...again, he actuall just applied for that Gaming/Memory thing thatds advertised here lol

A friend suggested it could be a NIC thats limiting the network to 10mbps? I believe that the Network Card in my old PC upstairs uses a 10mbps NIC so I'll find a 100mbps to exchange it with too as a precaution.

@atrull lol I'll draw a picture if the switch doesn't work.
