    RJ11 Cable

I think it's an RJ11 cable I'm after. It;s the one that goes from the microfilter into an ADSL modem/router. Nees to be about 5 metres long. Any idea where I can get one from online? I don't to have to pay out of my a$$ for one at PC World.

Try Maplin - alternatively get a standard 5M telephone extension cable for a few quid, and plug in your existing microfilter & short ADSL link into that?
Try to make each and every day the best it can be.

Normally I would, but it's for my sisters house. The phone socket is downstairs with a phone and the PC is upstairs. So the microfilter needs to be downstairs and then the RJ11 cable will go up the wall and through the ceiling/floor into her spare room.

I'll have a look on Maplins.

Alternatively put a Wireless modem/router/firewall box (e.g. NetGear DG834PN) near the phone socket and the computer can connect wirelessly from anywhere in the house??

It would be an option, but she just needs basic broadband access. I'd have to buy her a Wireless modem/router and a wireless NIC, I could buy 10 cables for that.

Maplin have then for about £7 with cheapish delivery so I'll probably get one off there for her.

Thnaks for your input EtheAv8r and for pointing me in Maplin's direction.

    NO NO NO NO NO

    BAD BOY!

    SMACK!

Wireless is for PDA + Laptops + Peodophiles (they steal the bandwidth of un-suspecting idoits to do their 'stuff').

It is most certainly NOT for desktops, if you want a reliable low latency high throughput connection.

if you cba to walk to maplin try www.rapidelectronics.co.uk if you want face plates + etc (do the job properly so to speak). Also ebay is quite good because of low postage costs.

    Linksys wrt54g + firmware update + wpa2 patches on system + openRadius+ wpa2 radius is pretty strong.

Even the above without radius but with a big long pre shared key can do the job and offer good latency. Just no dictionary words and set group key interval shuffle to something lower than the 3600 seconds set. 1200 seems acceptable.

The wrt54g output power can be increased to penetrate walls like they're sheets of paper.

The router with new firmware also has an iptables based QoS system that actually *works* excellent for gaming or VOIP sessions.

    No need for cables there

Found some 10metre RJ11 to RJ11 cables for £1.95 + £2 postage on ebay, probably go for them.

Its wireless, wireless is intermittent at best. In token ring networks, someone had to have a token to speak, wireless someone sees if the channel is busy, if not, then wait a random time, that can get progressivly larger. The upshot is wireless is very suspetible to DoS attacks caused by say, a fridge freezer.

Don't get me wrong, i'm writing this message on my wireless (just so happens to be 802.11a lynksis jobbie). Its just not for desktops.

Well My wireless is rock solid all round the house. I have 3 wired computers (2 desktops plus 1 Server) and 4 wireless Laptops (3 teenage daughters). My wireless is pretty secure and I only have 1 neighbour who is over 120 feet away through many many walls first.

If someone wants to enter my drive and steal my bandwith, if they are good enough to get on my network, I doubt if they are quick enough to escape my two Great Danes!!

    Wireless is OK.
