hell yeh, espesually if you've got a nick in the bottom slot of the case!

but they do have a purpose.

On the topic of the thread, i tend to buy my cables pre-made, as self crimped ones tend to be less stable, not to mention i only ever have solid core wire handy, you want stranged for cables as they should flex, but solid core when running it through the house (to socket face plates and the like). The cost isn't much greater than doing them yourself, and i'd rather spend the extra £1 on 10 patch cables. Sockets look neat, and increase the value of your house, if your renting to students it makes it so much easyer to find tennents (apparently!) So as it costs about £10 per room, + shead loads of effort, its worth it imo.

I'm just wondering now with the gigabit network... are you connecting more than 2 devices to it?

Do you have a gigabit hub/switch?

depends dom, if you've yet to decorate a room, definatly give it a try, if you've got carpet its quite easy to take it up, get under the floorboards and make wholes that go behind the skirting board.

Often thou, you can avoid such complexity, my room in my perants house has laminate flooring. Pain in the arse for wiring. But it has some underdrawings next to it, very easy to drill a whole throu, put a box on it (next to a bit of co-ax for TV/sky), and then run some wires along the under drawings, up to the attic, over the otherside, through a whole in the lounge, in some truncing in the corner (you can't notice it) and straight down to where the router used to be.

In my student house, the electrics were been re-wired, so i put in two runs of cable to each room, and had them all meet under the stairs. I wired under the floor boards, and it looked very neet.

try running one room to a central location, thats easy to get at, ie your study/lounge.

As for crossover leads, often, their not needed, most new network devices have cable sensing, so don't need crossover cables.

hmm strange, i'd of thought the 6000 would of had it.
    http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/abouthp/ipl.../automdix.html
HP ranting on about their patent of it But Auto-MDIX also brings a few others its worth noting. PHY = physical layer, people who make the MAC chips, such as relteck and intel.

all you need is one Auto-MDIX complient device and it should work, what model is the yukon, you might just need to turn it on (in device manager property pages).
88E8050 has it for sure (strokes the box to his right).

apparently the dell has a broadcom 440x for its NIC, which

leads me to belive should be auto-mdix.

I think... thats the cat6 boots would be the same as the cat5 ones.. they all use the same connector right? (rj45)

Always better to get bulk pack i got about 50 or 100 for around a tenner.. from eBuyer
