    Which Router/Modem?

Hi, I'm looking to bin my BT Voyager router as I'm currently connected visa usb to my pc and ethernet to my ps2 downstairs. I do not want to go wireless as tried this and was disappointed with the results.

I havent found the BT router to be very user friendly as would like to be able to use the firewall in a router and ditch my software firewalls.

Can you recommend me a decent modem/router with firewall also looking at one with a 4point switch in as when I build my new machine will be trying Linux on the old box but will still want net access etc.

Any opinions on the Netgear DG834 and D-Link DSL-504T as these seem to do the trick and can picked up on ebay for a decent price.

    Thanks
    Scott

D834G has done me fine tbh.

Would recommend a V2 tho if you can get one of those

AFAIK the outer box isn't marked with either a V1 or V2.

The only way of telling was on the actual router itself.

Someone will correct me if that is wrong its changed but I believe that to be the case.

I just checked on the netgear site an as far as I can tell it should be marked on the label under the router. Also the v2 is white all over where as the v1 has a silver colored top.

Am I going to notice much difference between this router and my current BT Voyager2091?

We've got a voyager 205, which is hooked upto our three PCs using a 8port netger switch.
    - Works fine for me. Not sure what a 'better' one would do tbh?
    - Also i was under the impression the 205 had a primative firewall in it anyway?
    - Finally, i also beleave that even with a hardware firewall, a software/personal firewall is recomended.

I'm connected via USB to my pc at the moment and my ps2 via ethernet and have had quite a few problems trying to get port forwarding to work correctly for some ps2 games.

I'm planning to build a new pc later ths year and thought that a 'one box solution' would be better that getting seperates.

I've also heard good things about the user interface and set up of the netgear.

I would still use windows firewall but thought I would be able to get rid of zone alarm.

    Cheers for the info.

Netgear definitely does have an easier interface than most. I used my DG834G V1 for years and it was superb (the V1 is 30cm wide and silver all over, the V2 is 20cm long and white all over). I was at one point a moderator of the Netgear forums and have seen a few of the V2's overheating but that seems to have been fixed with the new firmware. The router is very stable in my experience and easy to configure.

The DG834G has a SPI firewall + NAT so you dont need a software firewall to be honest. I had my DG834G configured well and over a 6month period didnt get a single hit on ZoneAlarm on my PC, thus I uninstalled it. I have now moved to a Speedtouch 716v5 as it is more compatable with ADSL2+ and it has a superb VoIP setup, though much harder to configure and misses out on some features.

One last comment, I would advise against the DG834GT as it has been found to be much less stable than the DG834G, even with current firmware builds. Hope that helps.

My first was a NetGear DG834G and it was good - I ran it for over 2 years, and now I have upgraded to a NetGear DG834PN which is rock solid and has better range and signal strenght & throughput that my original Netgear DG834G - which is now runnigg a friends home network quite happily.

However there is another option, quite a different way, which is VERY easy to set up and is looking a very good alternative, and that is HomePlug. There are a number of manufacturers (including NetGear), and thay comply to a commn standard - a friend of mine bought a pair this week and is very pleased with them - working in 5 minutes.

Have a look at http://www.homeplugs.co.uk/default.html but also google 'HomePlug' for more info.

they do look interesting and I've read a couple of mag reviews of them but they are pricey for what they are.

I treied the wireless route - Router behind tv downstairs connected to ps2 via ethernet then wirell link to pc upstairs but as my house is old = thick walls, the pc kept dropping the connection and the speed wasnt what I was expecting.

So now I have the router a the pc and have run cat 5 down to the ps2, when I upgrade my pc I'm planning to use the bits from my current set up as a media server and may also give linux a try so will want to network it.

The DG834 retails for about £50 but I've seen em going on ebay for £20 so seems like a bargain.

A DG834 (the early model ~ many of which were reportedly quite flakey) is not a DG834G and the cheap 834Gs on ebay will be the early Mk1 not the later and smaller Mk2s I suspect and will not go too well through thick, sold walls - the new DG834PN MIMO is much better with these - but cost a lot more, so be carefull if buying 'cheap' as generally you will get what you pay for in such a competative environment.

A pair of HomePlugs at £60-70 will be less that a good WiFi router - and could also be used to better position or utilise an existing WiFi 'ordinary or cheap' router in another room/floor.

    Good luck

By a country mile, the Buffalo WMR-G54, bundled with an ADSL2+ modem from Amazon for £52inc.

Another £14 on top and you get the Buffalo WMR-HP-G54-1 which has a higher powerfed wireless transmitter.

If you want to go a bit further upmarket have a look at Draytek. More expensive but for my money worth the extra. I run a 2600G with 2 desktops wired and 3 laptops using the wireless with no performance problems at all. When I'm home there is a 3rd laptop hooked up via CAT5. Just a 512 pipe so the link to the ISP isn't compensating in any way to help the router seem to perform better.
